Dear Crestwood Families,
Happy Lunar New Year!
We have so many things to celebrate at Crestwood ES! This week we celebrated 100th day of School and it was a fun one! Thank you Ms. Newby's class for the beautiful necklace made with 100 Fruit Loops. Thank you Kindergarten team for the 100th day celebration! Check out our Facebook page to see how our classes celebrated. We are also marking Black History Month celebrating contributions and accomplishments of Black artists. If you are able to do so, stop by and check out our beautiful display in the main lobby.
This week we had our first attendance winner for the week. They have won a Giant Foods gift card for their family. Remember, you can also be entered to win by making sure students come to school everyday.
I look forward to seeing you all on Monday. Don't stay up too late tonight watching the Super Bowl :)!

¡Tenemos tantas cosas que celebrar en Crestwood ES! ¡Esta semana celebramos el día 100 de la escuela y fue divertido! Gracias a la clase de la Srta. Newby por el hermoso collar hecho con 100 Fruit Loops. Gracias al equipo de Kindergarten por organizr la celebracion e los 100 dias! También estamos celebrando el Mes de la Historia Afroamericana, honrando las contribuciones y los logros de los artistas negros. Historically Black Colleges and Universities Spirit Week
In celebration of Black History Month, we are highlighting Historically Black Colleges and Universities! Historically Black Colleges and Universities were initially founded after the Civil War because former enslaved people were not allowed to attend college.
En celebración del Mes de la Historia Afroamericana, ¡destacamos a las Universidades y Colegios Históricamente Negros! Estas instituciones fueron fundadas después de la Guerra Civil debido a que a las personas anteriormente esclavizadas no se les permitía asistir a la universidad.
News from the PTA
Show our teachers and staff how much we care by supporting the Valentines Day Candy Bar! We will set up a spread of delicious candies in the teachers’ lounge on February 12th. Candy donations may be dropped off in the office by February 10th. Sign up here.
International Night is scheduled for April 26th and will celebrate the many cultures of our diverse school. If you would like to volunteer to support this event or have great ideas to share, please reach out to the Crestwood PTA.
The next PTA meeting will be on February 26th at 7:00 in the school cafeteria. Pizza and sweets will be provided. Feel free to send any agenda items you may have to the PTA prior to the meeting.

February 5-9 was National School Counseling Week. We want to give a special shout-out to our dedicated counselors, Ms. Bowman and Ms. Fasana! 🎉🙌 They play a crucial role in fostering the confidence and learning of our students by implementing counseling programs, creating a safe environment, and supporting academic success and social/emotional skill development. Their collaborative efforts with school staff, parents, and the community enhance the overall well-being of our students.

The Lunar New Year is a holiday that marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar, which is the calendar traditionally used in many east Asian countries including China, Vietnam, Singapore, and South Korea. In these and other Asian countries, it is one of the most important holidays of the year. Valentine's Day Celebrations
Teachers will be reaching out if they are having Valentine’s Day festivities. We are asking that parents follow these guidelines for the class celebration:
- Please contact your child’s teacher to check on types of allergies before purchasing snacks.
- No homemade snacks allowed.
- Balloons of any kind are not allowed (no bouquets, arches, or single balloons).
- Please send enough Valentine treats for the entire class.

BUGZ Play! Coming soon to a school near you!
Dear Kindergarten and First Grade Parents/ Guardians,
We are excited to announce that all Kindergarten and First Grade students will perform in the Bugz musical play this spring! There will be singing, choregraphed dances and lots of character speaking parts! In addition to learning songs and creative dance steps, your student will collaborate with others, develop communication and theatrical skills. This entertaining musical features a range of bugs: Army Ants, Bumble Bees, Lady Bugs and more – and they’re planning a picnic. A Stink Bug wants to come too – but wait, he wasn’t invited! Join us at this country-style hoedown to see if the critters can save the party! The Bugz play will take place on June 4, 2024. More details on the musical and your student’s costume to come soon!

¡Nos complace anunciar que todos los estudiantes de Kindergarten y Primer Grado participarán en la obra musical "Bugz" esta primavera! Habrá canto, bailes coreografiados y muchas partes con diálogos de personajes. Además de aprender canciones y pasos de baile creativos, su estudiante colaborará con otros, desarrollará habilidades de comunicación y teatro. Este entretenido musical presenta una variedad de insectos: hormigas soldado, abejorros, mariquitas y más, y están planeando un picnic. Una Chinche apestosa también quiere unirse, ¡pero espera, no fue invitada! Únanse a nosotros en este jaleo de estilo campestre para ver si los bichitos pueden salvar la fiesta. Summer Programs
🥁 Sign Up for FCPS Summer Camps
Registration is now open for several summer camps and learning opportunities offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools.
Tech Adventure Camp is available for current grade K-5 students to explore STEAM, culinary, health, trades, and business and marketing areas. E-IFTA is a weekly arts camp for elementary students who love to sing, dance, act, perform, make, and create. Visit the E-IFTA webpage to register.

A new Teacher-Referred Tutoring program feature provides targeted support and extends student learning. Teachers can now refer students for tutoring, with their specific needs already identified. Students can get extra support — on their own schedule — and reinforce their in-class learning.
Caregivers can guide students to access expert tutoring, homework help, and writing support by clicking on the Tutor.com icon in their Schoology portal—anytime, anywhere.
Plus, look for teachers’ tutoring session referrals on the Tutor.com homepage.

Magnet Schools
Learn About Science, Technology, and Arts Magnet Schools
Three FCPS elementary magnet schools provide programs that enhance learning in science, technology, and performing arts.
If you are interested in sending your student to an elementary magnet school program, consider attending a school-based information night at Hunters Woods Elementary School, Bailey’s Primary Elementary School, or Bailey’s Upper Elementary School.
Information nights will provide an opportunity to learn about individual school programs, student eligibility, the lottery process, and transportation.
Registration for the 2024-25 elementary magnet lottery is open Tuesday, March 5, through Friday, April 12. Get more information about the schools, their programs, and locations.
Lexia Night
📚 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read
FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools to use as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support, and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.Attend an information night on Monday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m., at Thoreau Middle School. Parents/caregivers will learn more about Lexia, and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom and supporting student growth in reading. Attendees will also get tips for supporting their students at home.

Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.
