BMP Something Sweet with Someone You Love

What a great turnout for our before-school community building opportunity - Something Sweet with Someone You Love.  It was wonderful to see families and staff come together.  We couldn't have done it without our amazing PTA!

Attendance Matters

Did you know that:

  • Regular attendance in elementary school improves the chances that your child will read on grade level.
  • Students who attend 90% or more of school are more likely to graduate from high school on time.
  • According to research, students who graduate from high school can earn more money which can lead to better living conditions, better health, and increased access to medical services.
  • It doesn’t matter whether the absences are excused or not, chronic absenteeism (missing 18 or more school days per year) is a primary cause of lower academic achievement.
  • Starting in Kindergarten, missing 10 percent can make it harder to learn to read.
  • According to research, irregular attendance can predict high school dropout, less job opportunities, and diminished health.

Orientation for Rising Kindergarten

Will your child be age 5 by September 30?  If the answer is yes, your child will be eligible to start kindergarten in the 2024-25 school year!

Join us for the BMP Orientation for Rising Kindergarteners on Thursday, April 11, 2024 beginning at 5:00 p.m.  Meet the kindergarten teachers, learn about the school policies and procedures, take a tour of the school, and learn more about what you can do before your child starts school to set him or her up for success.

Registration packets will be made available during the event, and registration appointments will be scheduled.  Registration paperwork, including information about required documents and medical requirements, are located at https://www.fcps.edu/registration/kindergarten-registration

Taking Pride in Black History Month

Taking Pride in Black History Month

The Stomping Eagles of Edison High School take extreme pride in not only their step routines but also in being the best representation of the students of Fairfax County Public Schools. This video of their routine, filmed last year for Black History Month, has quickly climbed the ranks to become FCPS’ most-liked video on YouTube!

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by Black Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Learn more about Black History Month and other heritage months, celebrations, and traditions celebrated in FCPS.

Black History Month Celebration

Fairfax County’s Black History Month Celebration will be held on Friday, February 23, at 5:30 p.m., at the Government Center. This year’s theme is The Value of Telling Our Stories. It will include performances, activities, discussion, and light refreshments. Visit the county’s website for details.

Throughout the month, Fairfax County Public Libraries will host several events celebrating Black history including movie screenings, lectures, and musical performances in-person and online.

Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA)

Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) is taken by students in grades 3, 4 and 5 in Fall and Winter. The Virginia Department of Education released a new score report format that FCPS is using.  For more information, please visit Virginia Growth Assessment Score Reports | Fairfax County Public Schools (fcps.edu)

Specialist Spotlight - Music

Our students have had a blast learning in music class since the New Year! Lower grades have been exploring a fun piece called "The Carnival of the Animals" by Camille Saint-Saens that uses music to imitate various animals. We have been exploring different artists to celebrate Black History Month including Louis Armstrong, Bob Marley, Florence Price, Ray Charles, and Miles Davis. 3rd graders have been enjoying the opportunity to begin recorder instruction. Our 5th grade Band and Strings students had their first concert of the year this past week and did a phenomenal job presenting their hard work from the first semester. Students that do not participate in band and strings have been exploring blues music through Orff arrangements in class. We are looking forward to our 5th grade Chorus being visited by the Holmes MS chorus director, Ms. Eddinger, this week!

Informing Families About Eating Disorders

In 2013, Virginia passed a law requiring every school system to provide information to parents annually about eating disorders with parents/guardians of students in the fifth through twelfth grades.

According to the National Eating Disorders Association (NEDA 2023),

Eating disorders are serious but treatable mental and physical illnesses that can affect people of all genders, ages, races, religions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, body shapes, and weights. In the United States, 28.8 million Americans will suffer from an eating disorder at some point in their lives.

There is no single cause of an eating disorder. Rather, it is a complex combination of biological, psychological, and sociocultural factors that converge and set off an individual’s predisposed genetic vulnerability.

In collaboration with the Fairfax County Health Department, FCPS has developed a web page with detailed information and resources about eating disorders.  To find out more, please visit the FCPS Eating Disorders website.

In addition to the information on the FCPS website, the National Eating Disorders Association has a toll free, confidential Helpline, 1-800-931-2237.
