One Book One School

Ivan

We are excited to bring back our “One Book One School” reading program!  This year, we are reading The One and Only Ivan.

Participating in a school-wide reading program such as “One Book One School” helps build a community of readers and a sense of belonging within our school. Reading together at home will help children listen better and longer, build bigger vocabularies, and develop a positive attitude about books and learning. When an entire school reads together, it generates excitement about reading and being part of a fun program.

We have started reading the book together at school, and we would love for your family to join us in reading and/or discussing The One and Only Ivan at home.  You are able to read along with one of our Forest Edge staff members by joining our Flipgrid.  The oldest child in your family should have received a copy of the book.  Please let your child’s teacher know if your family still needs a copy.

Our teachers are planning a fun-filled evening of One and Only Ivan themed trivia, activities, and games for our Literacy Night on February 29.  We hope you are able to join us from 5:30-7:00!

Desmos: Calculator, Activities, and Global Art Contest

Desmos Studio is a Public Benefit Corporation with a goal of helping everyone learn math, love math, and grow with math. They believe that everyone has an inner mathematician and that some people haven’t been given the opportunity, encouragement, or tools to discover theirs. Desmos prioritizes equity and accessibility at every level of their work.

Desmos.com offers free math tools to help people represent their ideas mathematically, connect different representations dynamically, make conjectures, and develop new ideas.

Many of our upper grade classrooms have used Desmos activities throughout the year. Students in grades 3-5 have explored the Virginia Testing Four Function Calculator and students in 5th ADV, 6th, and 6th ADV have explored the Virginia Testing Scientific Calculator

The 2023 Global Art Math Contest features a variety of interactive mathematics experiences using the Desmos calculator that are free and fun to explore regardless of age!

Tutor.com Teacher-Referred Tutoring

Through Schoology®, all FCPS students have 24/7 access to no-cost, year-round, on-demand, 1-to-1 tutoring services through Tutor.com.

A new Teacher-Referred Tutoring program feature provides targeted support and extends student learning. Teachers can now refer students for tutoring, with their specific needs already identified. Students can get extra support — on their own schedule — and reinforce their in-class learning.

Caregivers can guide students to access expert tutoring, homework help, and writing support by clicking on the Tutor.com icon in their Schoology portal—anytime, anywhere.

Plus, look for teachers’ tutoring session referrals on the Tutor.com homepage.

📚 Lexia Parent Night: How We Help Your Child Learn to Read

FCPS funds the use of Lexia for all elementary and middle schools to use as part of their literacy instruction. Lexia is a computer-based program that supplements classroom instruction to help students develop literacy skills. It also provides teachers with data to identify students who need additional support, and the ability to know which specific concepts and skills to prioritize.Attend an information night on Monday, February 12, at 6:30 p.m., at Thoreau Middle School. Parents/caregivers will learn more about Lexia, and how FCPS is integrating it into the classroom and supporting student growth in reading. Attendees will also get tips for supporting their students at home.

Register to attend or submit a question in advance. Unable to attend in person? Join on Zoom

Integrating Lexia into the literacy curriculum aligns with the Virginia Literacy Act, FCPS’ Equitable Access to Literacy, and FCPS Strategic Plan Goal 3, which aims to have all students reading on level by the end of third grade.

🚍 Here Comes the Bus

Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.

Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.

To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.

Already using the Here Comes the Bus app? Send your feedback to HCTB@fcps.edu.

Note: eNotify text messaging will continue to be used for reporting bus delays and bus incidents.
