Hello Bruin Families -
The month of February is full of recognitions and celebrations. Within FCPS, we celebrate our counselors this week, our School Resource Officers next week, and our bus drivers the week after. We are grateful for the opportunities to recognize and honor those who support our schools and who have made a difference in the past.

Lunar New Year The Lunar New Year is a holiday that marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar, which is the calendar traditionally used in many east Asian countries including China, Vietnam, Singapore, and South Korea. In these and other Asian countries, it is one of the most important holidays of the year.  Ash Wednesday Ash Wednesday is a holy day of prayer and fasting in many Western Christian denominations. It marks the beginning of Lent, a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving leading up to Easter. Many Christians attend special Ash Wednesday church services, at which churchgoers receive ash on their foreheads. Ash Wednesday derives its name from this practice. Quarter 2 Report Cards have now been posted in SIS.
The Report Card tab in ParentVUE provides the student’s marks for each grading period of the current school year.
If you have yet to set up your ParentVUE account, please reach out to Angela Santizo (assantizo@fcps.edu), Middle School Student Services Assistant or Sandy Coleman (smcoleman@fcps.edu), High School Student Information Assistant respectively to request your activation code. OR you may submit a Parent Support Request online.
Calling all aspiring 1st generation college students. The window to apply for the College Partnership Program is open from now until March 15.
***The goal of the College Partnership Program (CPP) is to systematically mitigate the impact of barriers to access and opportunity, and support students who are from populations that are historically underrepresented on college campuses.

SGA is sponsoring LOVE SPIRIT WEEK next week. We love to see staff and students participate!

Please check with your student to ensure they have pencils, loose leaf notebook paper and a charged laptop each day. The habits we establish now will serve your student this year and in the years to come. On behalf of the MS faculty we thank you for your continued support!
Another congratulations to our Middle School band students who participated in the Virginia Music Educators Association District XI Middle School Honor Band this past weekend. They represented LB in grand style!

If you have ordered a 2023 “Unstoppable” yearbook, your students may pick them up next week. From February 12 through 16, students can pick up their books during A and B Lunch.
Or, students can purchase those yearbooks in person—using cash or check, or, as always, online using the QR Code. Books will be made available the day after purchase.

Tickets for the winter musical Something Rotten are now on sale! A brief bit about the show: "Welcome to the Renaissance and the outrageous, crowd-pleasing musical farce, Something Rotten. Set in the 1590s Elizabethan England, William Shakespeare is approaching superstar status while some of his contemporaries (brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom) are struggling playwrights desperate to write a hit. When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theatre involves singing, dancing and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world’s very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self...and all that jazz."

Senior Fees
We are in the process of planning a meaningful graduation experience for the class of 2024. As we plan our various events, our top priority will be to keep our students, staff, and community safe. Understanding our plans may have to be adjusted along the way to adhere to FCPS guidelines, we are committed to making these events memorable and special. During our planning process, we also reviewed our budget and assessed our senior fees.
Senior fees typically cover all school-based costs for the students related to their graduation, such as: diplomas, flowers, caps, gowns, printing, and transportation. Senior fees do not include the costs incurred by individual students, such as: yearbooks, graduation announcements, All Night Graduation Party tickets, graduation photos, or a graduation DVD.
The Senior Fees for the Class of 2024 is $75.00. We encourage you to pay early. The deadline for senior fees is Friday, May 31 to be able to process all obligations and receive your cap and gown after graduation practice. The preferred method of payment for Senior Fees is MySchoolBucks (MSB). Beginning Monday, January 2, 2024, the Senior Fee product will be available in the MSB School Store. The instructions for online payments can be found on the Lake Braddock Secondary School website. If you would rather pay with cash or check, these payments can be dropped off in any of the high school sub schools. If paying with a check, please make your check payable to LBSS, memo “senior fee”. Checks can also be mailed to Lake Braddock, Attn: Finance Office. All seniors, even those who will not graduate until Summer School 2024, must pay the senior fees. No personal checks will be accepted after May 5, 2024. If there are concerns about being able to pay the fee and your student is on a free or reduced waiver, please come see Scott Darwin in Subschool 6.
Seniors must also meet all previously accumulated debts to the school. Caps and Gowns will not be given to any students until all obligations have been met and senior fees have been paid. Please start looking at MSB and clearing those obligations now.

Lake Braddock Secondary School is offering the Parent Project workshop for Spanish speaking families that have pre-teens or teenagers. This series of workshops will equip parents with the strategies needed to help manage their children’s behavior with less conflict. See attached flyer in English and Spanish.

Sign Up for FCPS Summer Camps and Learning Programs
Registration is now open for several summer camps and learning opportunities offered by Fairfax County Public Schools for all students.
Career and Technical Education (CTE) camps and Institute for the Arts camps will be held in July at Lake Braddock Secondary School from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Bus transportation will be available from select FCPS middle and high schools.
CTE programs are available for grade 6-11 students to explore CTE program areas, develop skills, and begin career exploration. IFTA allows students to select from nearly 90 classes in art, dance, health and physical education 9, music, and theater. Visit the IFTA webpage to register.
Summer Learning
Programs are also available for high school students to fulfill the Economics and Personal Finance course requirement, earn a high school course credit via this summer’s online campus program, or recover one high school course credit through the Credit Recovery Academy.
FCPS’ free online class for English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) provides FCPS middle and high school English Learners the opportunity to continue developing their academic, reading, and writing skills in online discussions with an ESOL teacher.

Here Comes the Bus
Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.
Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.
To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse
FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.
What can families do?
- Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
- Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
- Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage.
- Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
- Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”
