Attendance Matters

Did you know that:

  • Regular attendance in elementary school improves the chances that your child will read on grade level.
  • Students who attend 90% or more of school are more likely to graduate from high school on time.
  • According to research, students who graduate from high school can earn more money which can lead to better living conditions, better health, and increased access to medical services.

Specialist Spotlight - Math

Math

During math workshop, classroom teachers may use math tasks for instruction.  Math task is a problem that allows students to explore math concepts that require higher levels of thinking and problem solving.

Promotes Reasoning and Problem Solving

Math tasks allow for multiple solution strategies and provide students opportunities to share strategies with their peers.

Hands On and Engaging

Students are encouraged to use different manipulatives and tools to help them solve problems.  Some may draw models while others may use manipulatives.

Encourages Math Discourse

Math ideas are shared among peers allowing students to talk, compare strategies and analyze problems.

High Level Questioning

Purposeful questions will occur throughout the entire math task process to assess or to advance student thinking.

Try this task at home with your family:

Baskets of Apples

Farmer Quinn has an apple orchard. She packs apples in baskets to sell at the market.

  • She has 60 apples to pack in baskets.
  • She wants the same number of apples in each basket.
  • Show three ways she can pack the apples in baskets to sell at the market.
  • Explain your thinking using pictures, numbers, and words. Write a number sentence for each answer.
