Parent Volunteers Needed!!

Calling all Woodson parents…we need you to help proctor AP exams in May! As you know, we administer thousands of AP exams each spring to our Cavaliers and it takes a great deal of planning to implement and execute such a large scale testing plan. We rely on parent volunteers to proctor and cannot administer these without your help! This year, AP exams run from May 6-17. Shifts are typically from 7:30-11:30am or 11:00-3:00pm, with some variation depending on the exam, and you may sign up for as many shifts as you’d like. A more specific schedule will be shared closer to the AP exam testing window. No experience or training is required…we’ll show you everything you need to know! If you are able to volunteer and help, please contact Woodson school counselors Jamie Korpacz (jlkorpacz@fcps.edu) and Victoria Powell (vpowell1@fcps.edu). Thank you!

We meet each TUESDAY, from 3:00 pm- 4:00 pm in the Woodson Library. (If schools are closed or no late buses, we do not meet.)

Varsity Boys Basketball:

This week, the Cav boys basketball team secured two wins but had mixed performances. The Cavs handled Lake Braddock easily but played an unexpected nail-biter against West Springfield.

Facing Lake Braddock, the Cavs were assertive early and maintained control throughout the game. The boys displayed impressive skill in this game with some sound defensive play, great passing, highlight dunks, and the entire team getting some quality playing time. Notable plays included fast break dunks by Kaylen Chilton, Bryce Donovan, and Noah Limbago with an absurd dunk off the backboard after a great pass from Theo Burke. Kollin Morgan continues his work on the boards, threes by Ethan Conklin and Ryan Corallo, and a well executed pick and roll with Jordan Grabo and Sean Donovan led to a layup for Jordan at the rim. Playing to the Cav strengths allowed the boys to handle Lake Braddock in this game. Well done boys!

Up next was West Springfield which proved to be more challenging. After scoring 79 against Lake Braddock, West Springfield held the Cavs to just 41 points. The Cavs had to grind this win out. Sean Donovan hit two clutch free throws with 40 seconds left and David Gantumur hit a clutch three to take the lead with less than 10 seconds remaining to finish the scoring. The shot was reminiscent of the four OT game against WestPo with multiple clutch shots. The defense then closed out the win denying West Springfield a good look in the closing seconds. Although the highlight reel dunks against LB showcased the team’s athleticism, the gritty win in this game highlighted their composure and resiliency, both adding to the TEAM chemistry the boys will need for the remainder of the season and into districts and beyond.

Looking ahead, the Cav boys will play Fairfax at home on Tuesday 2/6 for senior night, followed by a matchup against South County on Friday to close out the regular season.

Indoor Track:

Justin Anderson breaks Indoor Track Patriot District Championship Record

What an amazing District Championships we had. Very proud of the athletes and how they came together and competed as a team. A lot of personal and season bests along with Regional and State qualifiers. The girls finished 3rd, only one point shy of being the runner-up and the boys finished 5th. Justin Anderson broke the Patriot District Championship record in both the 300m (Noah Lyles 2016) and the 500m (Josephus Lyles 2015). Both 4x400m teams finished 2nd overall. Colleen Gilbert finished 1st in the high jump. Celia Dawson finished 1st in the 3200m and 2nd in the 1600m. Taityn Speier finished 2nd in the pole vault. The girls 4x800m team finished 2nd with an impressive 4th leg finish by Madeleine Devlin. Hadley Vanek finished 3rd in the 1000m.  Just an amazing two days of competition. RESULTS

Varsity Rifle:

Rifle Remains Undefeated

Woodson Rifle continues their winning streak, remaining undefeated!  In their 5th  match of the season, Woodson Varsity defeated Lake Braddock Varsity 1611 to 1593.5. Representing Woodson Varsity were Ben Hays, Rushil Punukollu, Emma Cummings, Rachel Xu, and Maddie Bajo.  Woodson JV were upset by LB JV 1513.7 to 1524.4. The JV Team was represented by Stephen Labys, Jackson Pugsley, Lavana Mahajan, Chloe Li, and Mingmei Williams.

The previously postponed matches will be played this week.  Woodson will go against Langley on Thursday and Centreville on Saturday.  GO CAVS!

Girls Varsity Gymnastics:

Woodson Girls gymnastics took 3rd place (139.65) in Districts against Lake Braddock, Robinson, South County, West Springfield and Alexandria City.  This is the highest team score since 2013! All girls contributed to the stellar performance. The team advanced to Regionals - Feb 5 at 4:00pm at Robinson. Ari Smith placed 1st and Amelia Mazur-Chang placed 4th in All Around. Ari Smith placed 1st on bars, 2nd on vault and beam and 3rd on floor. Come cheer them on!

Ice Hockey Club:

The Woodson Ice Hockey Club had another great week.  First, the Varsity team took on Bishop O’Connell in a non-league on Friday night.  This is the first time we have played them, but both teams enjoyed the competitive game as a tune-up for each of our league’s upcoming playoffs and look forward to continuing games in the future.  The Cavs came up two goals short in an exciting 6 to 4 game, but the team played very well with Brady Kirchner scoring a goal, while Carson Edington and Shannon Force anchored the defense.

The Capitals Scholastic Hockey League’s (CSHL) playoffs begin on Friday night, February 9th.  The Cavs will take on Bishop Ireton at Tucker Road.  Puck drop is at 6:00 pm, so come out and support the team and help us make a deep playoff run!  Tucker Road is located at 1770 Tucker Road, Fort Washington, Maryland.

The JV team will play its final game on Monday night, February 12th, against West Potomac.  The game will also be played at Tucker Road Ice Rink.  Puck drop is at 6:30 pm.

Finally, the team won Hockey Night in NOVA’s (HNINOVA) best student section (fans) competition for the CSHL and will go up against the winner of Independence High School and Chantilly/McLean from the NVSHL for the overall NOVA champion.  Voting on Instagram should go live on Sunday night at 8:30 pm, February 11th and go through 8:30 pm on February 12th.  Please mark your calendars and give us your vote at https://www.instagram.com/hockeynightinnova/

From the desk of Congressman Gerry Connolly, Virginia’s 11th District:

Congressional Art Competition

I want to take this opportunity to bring the Congressional Art Competition to your attention. This competition is open to all high school students who are residents of the 11th Congressional District, regardless of where they attend school. Public, private, and home-schooled students are all invited to participate, and I encourage any student who may be interested to submit an entry.

I look forward to hosting this event every year, as it affords students in our district the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent and creativity. Students do not need to create a new piece of art specifically for this competition – they are welcome to submit any piece from their portfolio.  Past years’ competitions have included paintings, photographs, drawings, digital art, and more.

The winning piece will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year, and with the permission of the artists, additional high-ranking pieces will be displayed in my Capitol Hill and district offices.

Individual arrangements will be made for the collection of the Best in Show piece to be transported to DC. Only the winning piece will be required to meet the established framing guidelines.
