Oak View Review

Oak View Celebrates Black History Month

Oak View Librarian, Mrs. Atkins, has curated a tremendous display of books to celebrate Black History Month and showcase the works of Black authors and illustrators, including those from Virginia or about topics that took place in Virginia. As you can see in the pictures below, these books include a special Black History Month bookmark that students get to keep after checking out the book. The bookmarks are reserved for books by Black authors, illustrators and/or highlight the impact of accomplishments and achievements by Black individuals in the history of our country. These books can be found in three main sections of our library including the tops of all shelves when entering library, the monthly special section, labeled Black History Month, and the section under the screen that includes the Virginia specific section, also shared on our morning announcements. Please encourage your child to check out one or more of these books this week and share them together at home. We thank Mrs. Atkins for creating such an impactful display.

Oak View Welcomed Back GMU Men's Volleyball Team

Oak View students were again treated to a visit from the GMU Men's Volleyball Team this past Friday. Students were eager to hang out with them during lunch and recess. No matter how often they visit, the students and adults are in awe of just how tall you need to be to play collegiate volleyball! 6th Grade Teacher, Mrs. Smith, even had to snap a quick pic. As one of our taller staff members at nearly 5'8", she felt a tad on the small side when standing with the team. We thank GMU for their partnership and our Oak View sponsors for handling the arrangements.

Save the Date - March 15 Oak View Night at GMU Volleyball!

As part of our continued partnership, GMU has invited Oak View students, staff and families to a future home volleyball game on Friday, March 15. Please save the date and look for more information in a future Review. We will sport our very best green and gold in support of Oak View and GMU! Go Patriots!

Here Comes the Bus

Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.

Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.

To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.

Already using the Here Comes the Bus app? Send your feedback to HCTB@fcps.edu.

Note: eNotify text messaging will continue to be used for reporting bus delays and bus incidents.

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Visit FCPS’ website for more information.
