2.4.24 Community Gazette

Principal

Glasgow Parents and Community:

Greetings! I hope this message finds everyone well. This weekend I was involved in recruiting for FCPS at an instructional fair and enjoyed some time with my 4 and 7 year old. I hope everyone’s February is starting off well. National School Counseling Week 2024 (#NSCW24) is Feb. 5-9, 2024, to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems. National School Counseling Week, highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career.  Consider sending your child’s counselor a note of thanks for the support they provide to your child in honor of National School Counseling Week!

Speaking of our school counselors…the School Counseling team will be hosting Caregiver Coffees for current 6th and 7th grade families about academic advising on February 13th at 2:30pm and February 20th at 7:30am. Come by to ask questions about course selection and next school year. Light refreshments will be provided. If you would like to attend, please fill out this form here.

A few celebrations: 1. Reviewing our data, I see that we have reduced our Level 4 & 5 behaviors within the SR&R from this time last year by 48%, the previous year was a reduction of 20%. This is a data point that parents and the community asked me in the end of the year survey to make a priority. Happy about the progress but still want to decrease even more. 2. Shout out to JMU alumni, we have received a number of requests from 2024 education graduates that they only want to work at Glasgow MS and that they are pursuing our school as their destination. This is great news! It was a pleasure this past week receiving some awesome feedback from our new OT’s in the building:

“As OTs, we travel to many schools over the course of the week and have seen all kinds of school environments. We have been to Glasgow twice now, and we have been given such a warm welcome each time. We have been wandering in the halls trying to find our way, and there has been no shortage of people volunteering to help us find where we need to go. The teachers and IAs have also been so flexible with scheduling and allowing us to come into their classes to see students. The helpfulness of everyone we have encountered has created such a great environment to work in. Thank you!”

You are invited to a Glasgow PTA Zoom meeting. When: Feb 6, 2024 07:00 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada) Register in advance for this meeting:

🚍 Here Comes the Bus

Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.

Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.

To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.

Already using the Here Comes the Bus app? Send your feedback to HCTB@fcps.edu.

Note: eNotify text messaging will continue to be used for reporting bus delays and bus incidents.

Winter weather & appropriate Clothing

As we enter the winter months, cold weather will be in the forecast. We want to make sure all students are prepared for the cold weather as they wait at the bus stop, play outside for recess, and make their way home at the end of the day. Please make sure you are sending students to school with their winter coats, gloves, hats, and scarfs. If your child is in need of a winter coat, please reach out to our Student Services Department at Glasgow MS.

Please see the National Weather Service (NWS) website for information on cold weather safety.

How to Handle Disappointing Grades: Ways to Uncover the Reasons Behind Your Child’s School Performance and How to Help with Ann Dolin

Disappointing grades are not always a fair indication of how hard your child is trying, how much they’re learning, or what their potential for success is later on in life (especially for those with ADHD and other learning differences).

On the surface, disappointing grades represent a failure at school. But there’s usually a lot more to it and many emotions for parents and students at stake!

Webinar Highlights:

  • What to do if your child comes home with bad grades (and how to prevent over-reacting)
  • How to talk to your child about their school performance, including some easy conversation starters
  • Ways to investigate why it’s happening and the two most common reasons for poor grades
  • What to do about it moving forward, including strategies to help your child study more effectively and stay organized
  • Whether you should set consequences for your child’s bad grades (or reward them for good grades)

Join Ann Dolin, educator, author, and Educational Connections Founder for new strategies to tackle these sticky situations while preserving your relationship with your child.
