Atoms Weekly Recap

A recap from the week in winter sports:

Girls Basketball hosted their final home game of the season vs Lewis. The Atoms celebrated three seniors on the evening and celebrated a victory over the Lancers. The freshman fell short in their exciting game while JV scored early and often on their way to a win. Varsity saw themselves in an early double digit deficit but their grit and determination saw the Atoms take a lead into the 4th quarter. The last frame was an exciting back and forth affair that ultimately saw the Atoms behind Ava Sewall and senior Susan Aburish put the Lancers away in the final minute to get the win! The Atoms continued their hot streak for three quarter at TJ but cooled off in the fourth quarter, falling short in their attempt to get a second win in a row. The Atoms played well and saw themselves trailing by one after three before TJ got hot to put the Atoms away in the fourth. The Atoms travel to Edison Monday evening.

Boys Basketball played two key districts games this week. The first one saw the Atoms dominate the Lancers in the varsity game. The Atoms jumped out early and never took their foot off the pedal as they ran away from the Lancers to secure a huge district win. The Atoms welcomed TJ Friday evening in a pivotal district matchup. The crowd was treated to an exciting game with the Atoms holding multiple leads in the first half but trail at the half. The second half saw lead changes throughout before TJ settled in in the last half of the fourth quarter to put the Atoms away. The Atoms host Edison Monday evening to kick off the last week of the regular season.

Swim/Dive had a successful National District Championship Meet with several swimmers and divers qualifying for the Occoquan Region Championships February 9 and 10. The Atoms competed hard all night with a couple swimmers being crowned district champions in their events. Colin McGee started the evening off with an impressive swim to win districts in the 200IM. Melanie Decareau had a great 50 freestyle event but fell short of a district championship by a mere .01 seconds! Noah Popp completed the individual events for the Atoms running away with a district championship in the 100M backstroke. All three have qualified for the region meet and are at the cut line for state qualifying times. The Atoms relay teams had great nights as well as the boys and girls relay teams all qualify for the region meet. The boys 200IM, 200 Freestyle, and 400 freestyle relays all took second place in their respective events with the first two only being within two seconds of state qualifying times. All swimmers will get one more shot at an opportunity for states as they compete in the Occoquan Region Championships next Friday and Saturday at Oak Marr Rec Center in Vienna.

Wrestling traveled to Lewis Thursday for the National District Championships. It was tough early for the Atoms as two wrestlers made it to the semifinals after round 1. However, the Atoms hung tough and fought back to get 11 of 14 wrestlers to qualify for the Occoquan Regional Championships. The Atoms were highlighted by Jordy Lopez Funes who the district championship in his weight class! Jordy goes into the region tournament as the number one ranked wrestler. All 11 wrestlers will compete Wednesday and Thursday at Robinson in the Occoquan Regional Championships.

Indoor Track competed in the National District Championships this week. There was some impressive showings by multiple Atoms led by Pamela Moura and her district championship in the triple jump event! The girls 4x200 relay took second place in their respective event to qualify for the region championship meet. There were multiple Atoms who qualified for the regions including Pamela Moura, Teagan Scott-Daniels (auto qualified), and Logan Noyes in the high Jump to name a few. These Atoms will compete in the Occoquan Region Championships February 14 and 15.

Gymnastics completed their season Monday at the National District Championships at Mount Vernon. The Atoms showcased their skills throughout the evening and were impressive to see the growth each gymnasts has had during the season. Kate Hanlon was able to secure a spot in the Occoquan Regional Championship with her top three finish in three different events. She will compete Monday evening at Robinson at 4:30pm

Atoms Boosters Concession Stand Help

Special Ask... Atoms After School Snack Bar

As many of you know, the Atoms Athletic Boosters has been able to open our concessions stand after school for your children to grab a bite to eat prior to heading to their activities. If your schedule allows, please consider volunteering 1 day a week or even just 1-2 days a month. The hours are 3:15-4:15. This is a rare benefit in Fairfax County that we are able to provide for our kids, but we can’t do it without parent help. Please contact at odessapmurray@gmail.com or (703) 626-9647 if interested in helping.
