Principal's Message

Dear KJMS Families,

Welcome to second semester! As February begins, we are all enjoying the extended daylight that we are getting as we head towards spring. We cannot wait to see you all at upcoming concerts and the spring play. The student population at KJMS continues to grow, and we are up to 1,166 students! Our after school program is bustling with hundreds of students staying after each day; in fact, we are one of the most well attended middle school programs in all of FCPS. We love Mr. Dejo and his team! As a reminder, our teachers stay after school at least once per week. Be sure to look at our updated schedule.

Did you know that our Katherine Johnson students speak over 50 different languages at home. We love our diversity! In that light, we would love to honor different cultures during the designated FCPS awareness months. We also know many of our families have connections with local embassies or may have items at home they would be willing to loan us for school displays during designated months. If you happen to have access to such items, please email falam@fcps.edu (KJMS Equity Lead) to arrange for us to utilize your materials for that month. We would need them by the 20th of the month before the designated month. Right now, we are collecting items for February: Black History Month

Next:

March: National Women’s History Month (March).

April: National Arab American History Month; Muslim American Heritage Month

May: Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month; Jewish American Heritage Month

June:  LGBTQIA+ PRIDE Month; Juneteenth; National Caribbean American Heritage Month

September: National Hispanic Heritage Month

October: Indigenous Peoples Day, LGBTQIA+ History Month; Disability History and Awareness Month

November: Native American Heritage Month

We wish our Math Counts team the best of luck as they compete this coming weekend at Chantilly HS. We are also proud that our orchestral and choral (Bella Canzone) students who participated in November’s VMEA Conference performances will be recognized at the FCPS School Board meeting on February 22.

Your proud principal,

Tammy Silipigni

National School Counseling is Next - 2/5 - 2/9

pic

National Counseling Week is just around the corner, from February 5 to 9, and it is the perfect time to celebrate the superheroes of our school community: our amazing counselors! This week helps highlight the tremendous impact school counselors have in helping students achieve academic success and planning for a career. School counselors work with students in a variety of different capacities, whether it is through classroom lessons, group sessions, or individual counseling. Learn more about the role of school counselors in FCPS.

Our amazing counselors are:

Mr. Barnes, Ms. Oeur, Ms. Ranallo, and Ms. Williamson

Kathryn Teague, Director, Student Services

Give a shout out to your school counselors. It would mean the world to them.

  • Take a moment to write a thank you note. Share specific ways your counselor has helped you or your child, and how their guidance has made a positive difference.
  • Get creative! Draw a picture or write a poem expressing your gratitude.
  • Spread the word! Encourage your classmates, friends, and family to join in and show their appreciation for our school counselors.

Let us shower our counselors with the appreciation they deserve!

Below is a list of our counselors and their teams:

February Is Career and Technical Education Month

By enrolling in a Career and Technical Education (CTE) course or program, students learn the technical applications of many occupations while preparing for higher education or entry-level employment. A core program of CTE courses is offered in every middle and high school including Business and Information Technology, Family and Consumer Sciences, Health and Medical Sciences, Marketing, Technology and Engineering Education, and Trade and Industrial Education. Since this is an elective, course offerings may vary by school. Learn more on the CTE website.

Attendance Matters

This is the time of year when winter weather and children’s illnesses can take a toll on school attendance. But it’s important to get your children to school every day possible.

If you are unsure whether to send your children to school, consult your doctor or this website Health and Safety Guidance webpage for guidance. Our school nurse is also a terrific resource for chronic health conditions.

Do what you can to keep your children healthy. Dress them warmly for the cold weather and make sure they’ve got hats and gloves. Encourage them to wash their hands regularly and send them to school with a bottle of hand sanitizer.

Here Comes the Bus

Want to know if your child's bus is on schedule or where the bus is? Here Comes the Bus® is an easy-to-use website and app that enables parents to see the location of their child’s school bus — almost in real time — on a smartphone, tablet, or personal computer.

Parents can track multiple buses if their children don’t all ride the same bus; know exactly when children arrive at school or the bus stop; and receive customized text and/or email notifications about bus locations, schedule changes, or delays.

To get started, download the app from the Apple iOS or Android app store. Check out the Here Comes the Bus and Frequently Asked Questions webpages for more information.

Already using the Here Comes the Bus app? Send your feedback to HCTB@fcps.edu.

Note: eNotify text messaging will continue to be used for reporting bus delays and bus incidents.
