Dogwood

Dear Dogwood Dragons,

Thank you for coming out to learn how to engage your prek-2nd grade students during our evening family event, Learning Under the Stars. You are their first teacher and the bridge between school and home is one of the largest predictors of student success. Parents who engage their child about school, help the child understand the importance of attending and learning. It was a wonderful event with many teachers volunteering their time and talents to model how you can support both reading and math.

I want to give a special thank you to Kids R First and Stohlman Subaru for donating 500 winter coats for our students. During our event we gave away over 375 jackets. Please let the school office, counselor, family liaison or teacher know if your child is in need of a winter coat. Winter weather has not yet passed us by.

Our school is a big part of our community. We want to be partners. We love seeing you.

Sincerely,

Kate Beckner, proud principal

3rd Quarter

As we enter the 3rd quarter, we are hopeful that you will continue to check-in with your child and hear about all of the wonderful learning opportunities that they are participating in while at school!  A great way to have richer conversations with your child is to check-in with him/her by asking some of the questions listed below. This will support you learning a little bit more about your child's day while they are at school.

  • What is something creative you did today?
  • Who did you sit with at lunch today?
  • Tell me something you learned today.
  • What did you eat first at lunch?
  • If you could change one thing about the day, what would it be?
  • What made your teacher(s) smile today?
  • What is your favorite thing to do at recess?
  • What is the best thing that happened today?
  • Did you help anyone today?
  • What was your thorn, and what was your rose today?
  • What are you looking forward to for tomorrow?
  • Teach me something you learned.
  • What kinds of things did you see people eating for snack?
  • Did you learn any new words today?

Parent Notification & Opt-out forms were sent home in Thursday folders. If you choose to opt your child out of this screener, please fill out and return the form by February 22.

🙋Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

The beginning of a quarter is a great time to continue to review strong attendance habits! Students who attend school regularly are more likely to perform well in reading and math, develop strong social and emotional skills, and graduate from high school on time. Help prepare your child for future success. Watch this video with tips from Fairfax Pyramid principals and visit FCPS’ Attendance webpage for tips and strategies.
