V - Voice: We foster an environment that inspires and empowers individual creativity and uniqueness while hearing and valuing each story.
E - Engagement: We encourage students to discover and establish their academic and extra-curricular passions in individual and communal contexts.
R - Resilience: We traverse difficult journeys utilizing resources to navigate personal, physical, and academic challenges.
S - Strength: We support one another and are stronger as a group than as individuals.
E - Ethical Behavior: We hold each other in positive regard, interacting with one another ethically and uplifting those around us.

Swim & Dive:

Girls Swim and Dive Patriot District Champions

Lady Cavs bringing home the Patriot District Championship.

Boys with a strong 3rd place finish.

Way to go swimmers, coaches and volunteers.

Varsity Boys Basketball:

Varsity Boys Basketball against Alexandria City

Boys basketball played well this week but split their games against the top teams in the district. The Cavs continue to play competitively striving to carve out their identity among the elite teams in the district.

Against Alexandria City, the Cav boys took home the win after a solid team effort on both sides with standout performances from multiple players. Kaylen Chilton had a stellar game, showcasing the best of his young career by contributing on both ends of the court. Kaylen, alongside Noah Limbago, took on the defensive assignment against AC’s top scoring threats, made the AC duo work all night and proved crucial for the team. Will Taylor’s consistent and fundamentally sound play, particularly on the defensive end with his help rotations, also played a vital role in the victory. The team’s collective defensive focus, a season-long focus, continues to improve. In a tight game, notable clutch free throws by Jordan Grabo kept the Cavs in front and all pressure on AC. It was a great team win.

After the first matchup against West Potomac went to four overtimes in a win, the second game against the Wolverines was just as competitive but the Cavs ended on the short end. Sean and Bryce Donovan were active and tough to start the game with a couple solid defensive plays and starting the scoring down low while David Gantumur contributed hitting his first three point shot of the game. Although scoring was challenging all game, a superb basketball sequence of movement, passes, and cutting between Theo Burke, Ethan Conklin led to a slashing Noah Limbago scoring an easy bucket. Neither team went up by more than four points for most of the game. In the end, WestPo’s ability to convert some tough shots against the solid Cavs defense turned out to be the difference in the game. The student section was electric the entire game and provided a great atmosphere for the game.

Looking ahead, the Cav boys will play Lake Braddock and West Springfield this week.

Woodson Rifle Team competing

Varsity Rifle:

The Woodson Rifle Team remains undefeated! In their 4th match of the season, Woodson Varsity athletes Ben Hays, Rushil Punukollu, Emma Cummings, Rachel Xu, and Stephen Labys defeated Robinson 1599 to 1585.8.  The JV Team athletes Maddie Bajo, Chloe Lee, Mingmei Williams, Jackson Pugsley and Lavanya Mahajan did a great job and defeated Robinson JV 1546.7 to 1519.3.

The match against Centreville was postponed due to weather.  The next scheduled match is February 1 vs Lake Braddock.  Matches against Centreville and Landon are TBD.

Girls Varsity Gymnastics:

Woodson Girls gymnastics took 2nd place (130.9) against Lake Braddock, Annandale, Falls Church, and TJ. Allie Syron placed 4th all-around (32.05). Ari Smith placed 2nd (9.1) on floor.  Amelia Mazur-Chang placed 2nd (9.1) on beam and 4th (9.05) on floor. The team celebrated Julianne Dee during Sr. Night. Julianne has been on the team for 4 yrs and enjoyed practicing and competing with her teammates. Congrats! Districts is Jan 31 at 6pm at Robinson.

Ice Hockey Club:

The Woodson Ice Hockey Club had a great week, securing two big wins!  The Varsity team traveled to Prince William Ice Center on Friday night to take on the Woodbridge Vikings.  Carson Edington got the scoring started with a one-timer on a beautiful pass from Seth Bond (Robinson) and the Cavs never looked back, dominating the Vikings with over 50 shots on goal enroute to a 7 to 1 win.  Brady Kirchner also picked up a goal.  Wyatt Borgeson chipped in with a pair of assists, and Derek Hanson and Carson Edington also had assists on the night.  The win brought the team’s record back to .500, 5-5-1 and secured third place in the very competitive North Division of the Capitals Scholastic Hockey League (CSHL) heading into the playoffs in a couple of weeks.

In the JV game, Barrett Wilford got the game winning goal (GWG) late in the third period in a barn burner against Alexandria City’s JV team, where Woodson secured the 8 to 7 win!  Wyatt Borgeson, Derek Hanson, and Sam Forrester also added goals for the Cavs.

This week, the Varsity Team will take on Bishop O’Connell in a non-league game on Friday night, February 2nd, at Medstar Capitals Iceplex, in Arlington, Virginia.  Puck drop is at 7:40 pm.

The JV team plays West Potomac at Tucker Road on Monday night, February 12th, at 6:30.

As always, there is no cost to attend, so come out and support the team and watch some exciting hockey!  Medstar Capitals Iceplex is located at 627 N Glebe Road, Suite 800, Arlington, VA.

From the desk of Congressman Gerry Connolly, Virginia’s 11th District:

Congressional Art Competition

I want to take this opportunity to bring the Congressional Art Competition to your attention. This competition is open to all high school students who are residents of the 11th Congressional District, regardless of where they attend school. Public, private, and home-schooled students are all invited to participate, and I encourage any student who may be interested to submit an entry.

I look forward to hosting this event every year, as it affords students in our district the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent and creativity. Students do not need to create a new piece of art specifically for this competition – they are welcome to submit any piece from their portfolio.  Past years’ competitions have included paintings, photographs, drawings, digital art, and more.

The winning piece will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year, and with the permission of the artists, additional high-ranking pieces will be displayed in my Capitol Hill and district offices.

Individual arrangements will be made for the collection of the Best in Show piece to be transported to DC. Only the winning piece will be required to meet the established framing guidelines.
