Congratulations to kindergarten teacher, Evelyn Ransom, and family liaison, Rubia Rodriguez, who were honored as Hollin Meadows' Outstanding Teacher and Outstanding Operational Employee.
A Note from Mr. Gates
On Monday we will begin the third quarter of the school year. We look forward to lots of new learning opportunities. Teachers are finishing up midyear assessments while preparing to introduce new units in reading and math. Although we’ve had lots of days off in January, we are looking forward to coming to school every day. Please remember that school starts daily at 8:20 a.m. (school doors open at 8:05 a.m.) With so many missed days of school in January, it is important for students to be at school on time every day.
Parents will be able to view their child's second quarter progress report in the ParentVUE app on Monday, February 5. We will send home the paper copy in the Tuesday Folder on Tuesday, February 6. As always, if you have questions, don't hesitate to connect with your child's teacher.
This past week we welcomed guidance counselor Leslie Fry. Ms. Fry is replacing Ms. Shirley. An experienced counselor, Ms. Fry is excited to join the Hollin Meadows community and work with our wellness team to provide services to students, staff and family members. You may contact Ms. Fry at lrcalhounfry@fcps.edu
As always, thank you for your continued support of all things Hollin Meadows. Here's to wonderful week ahead!
Jon Gates
Principal

How to Handle Disappointing Grades: Ways to Uncover the Reasons Behind Your Child’s School Performance and How to Help
Disappointing grades are not always a fair indication of how hard your child is trying, how much they’re learning, or what their potential for success is later on in life (especially for those with ADHD and other learning differences).
On the surface, disappointing grades represent a failure at school. But there’s usually a lot more to it and many emotions for parents and students at stake!
Webinar Highlights:
- What to do if your child comes home with bad grades (and how to prevent over-reacting)
- How to talk to your child about their school performance, including some easy conversation starters
- Ways to investigate why it’s happening and the two most common reasons for poor grades
- What to do about it moving forward, including strategies to help your child study more effectively and stay organized
- Whether you should set consequences for your child’s bad grades (or reward them for good grades)
Join Ann Dolin, educator, author, and Educational Connections Founder for new strategies to tackle these sticky situations while preserving your relationship with your child.

Attendance Matters
Data shows that: Missing just 10% of school — just two days a month — negatively affects a student’s academic performance.
Only 17% of students who were chronically absent in both kindergarten and first grade were reading proficiently in third grade, compared to 64% of those with good attendance.
Students who fail to read at grade level by the end of third grade are four times more likely than students who achieve proficiency to drop out of high school.
By sixth grade, chronic absenteeism becomes a leading indicator that a student will drop out of high school.
Attendance is critical for academic success. Visit our website for more attendance resources
The Importance of Up-to-Date Immunizations
Immunizations are required for public school entry and help keep students protected from serious diseases. While COVID-19 vaccinations are not required, many other immunizations are. Check with your students’ healthcare providers now to make sure they are up to date on their immunizations. Immunization records can now be updated online in SIS ParentVUE through the Online Verification Update form. To access that form, click Online Packets in the top right of the screen after logging in to SIS ParentVUE. Caregivers can obtain an activation key letter to activate their SIS ParentVUE account by contacting the main office 703.718.8300.
