CVHS Attendance Update

CVHS Attendance Update

Wildcat Families,

I shared earlier this school year that one of our major goals at CVHS is to improve student attendance.  Students missing just two days per month is associated with decreased academic performance, and this includes both unexcused and excused absences.  Please help us stay focused on improving attendance throughout the second semester!

Please review the attendance data below as of January 27, 2024:

FCPS Division Chronic Absenteeism Rate for All Students as of 1/27/24

CVHS Chronic Absenteeism Rate as of 1/27/24

Average of the 25 FCPS High Schools Absenteeism Rate as of 1/27/24

CVHS 2022-2023 Absenteeism Rate June 2023

13.2%

15.9% 15.1% 23%

School staff are working to carefully monitor and respond to attendance concerns. We are making improvements with attendance; however, we still have much work to do.

The Virginia Department of Education defines chronic absenteeism as missing 10% (18 school days) or more of the school year, regardless of reason.  Schools must keep their absenteeism rate below 15% to be in good standing. We must all continue to work together to make improvements in attendance.

Student tardiness also has an impact on class performance. Our school’s tardy data is highlighted below as of January 22, 2024.  As you can see, we have more than double the average number of tardies to 1st and 2nd period classes than any other period of the day.  It is important that students arrive at school by 8:00am to avoid being late to class.

CVHS Average Number of Tardies for Periods 1 & 2 as of 1/22/24

CVHS Average Number of Tardies for Periods 4-8 as of 1/22/24

5,300 total student tardies

2,079 total student tardies

Parents have a huge influence on their student’s attendance.  Please be sure to:

  • Avoid allowing students to stay home unless they are truly ill, or have another valid excused reason.
  • Have students attend a partial day rather than missing a whole day for appointments.
  • Ensure that students arrive at school on time and attend all classes.
  • Schedule medical appointments outside of school hours when possible.
  • Plan family trips and vacations during student holidays.
  • Remind students they cannot leave campus without permission.

All families will be receiving attendance information along with second quarter report cards for your students, and attendance information for your student can be viewed on SIS ParentVUE.  Don’t hesitate to connect with your student’s teacher, counselor, or administrator with any questions.  Thank you for partnering with us in this important work.
