1.28.24 Community Gazette

Principal

Glasgow Parents and Community:

Greetings! We are headed into the second semester and third quarter next week!  Some students will have new semester classes which may impact their schedule. Parents and students can also access the new class schedule through ParentVue or StudentVue.  We will continue our next cycle of intervention with a priority on Special Education, Science, and Absenteeism

On Saturday, January 13th, 2024 Glasgow hosted the US CHESS ASSOCIATION competition. We had 7 Glasgow students compete in a field of over 70 participants. We thank the students and families that came out and supported the event. We had some friendly adult competition as well. It was a great experience for our school and family.

First ever Track and Field season is approaching and we’re looking for TWO coaches. Whether you are a FCPS staff or not, a seasoned veteran or not, all are welcome! Coaches will be provided with detailed training plans for all the events (100m, 200m, 400, 800m, 1600m, long jump, shot put) and all the information/equipment needed will also be provided. Practices will be twice a week at GMS and competition will be held on Saturdays mornings. This is a perfect opportunity to be a part of history and make a difference as this will be the first ever season of Track and Field for GMS. If you’re interested in coaching the Track & Field team for Glasgow Middle School, please contact John Lee (jjlee4@fcps.edu) or Greg Williams (gwilliams2@fcps.edu)! Season begins in April!

Humbly,

Victor L. Powell, Principal

GMS Bands - National Anthem Pictures

I just want to say thank you to everyone who came out to support us on Saturday and helped us manage the logistics of an awesome day! You’ll find pictures taken of the band by the GMU photographer (who is a retired FCPS elementary band teacher)! I was so proud of our student’s performance, and even prouder of their behavior throughout the event. I received several compliments about how professionally our students acted, and everyone was impressed with our performance. Being a GMU alumni, this was a special event for me, and seeing our students there made me so extraordinarily happy!

Thank you all again,

Andrew Sharrock

Academic Advising and Course Selection

Rising 7th-12th grade students are discussing course selection for next year with their school counselors. Parents/caregivers should discuss this process with their children to ensure students select courses that align with their interests, career goals, and postsecondary aspirations.

As they choose courses, students should also consider their personal well-being, as well as extracurricular activities and commitments. School-life balance is an important consideration. Parents/caregivers are welcome to contact their student’s school counselor with questions.

Review the Graduation Requirements and Course Planning webpage to help make informed decisions for high school and beyond. Refer to our school-specific course catalog and advising information.

Glasgow Middle School Course Selection

The course selection process for the 2024-2025 school year is beginning!  This week, Rising 7th and 8th grade Glasgow students will receive lessons about course options.  Counselors will be meeting with students for academic advising throughout January and February in their Social Studies/History and Health/PE classes. Once students begin academic advising, course selection previews will be available in SIS ParentVue and SIS StudentVue by selecting “Course Request”.  Please talk with your child about the classes that they want to take.  Rising 9th grade students will meet with counselors later in the month of February.  Stay tuned to future Gazettes for more information for students and families about course offerings at Glasgow!

Student Prayer Opportunities

Per FCPS Policy, Glasgow provides accommodations for students who request time and space during the school day for prayer. Students may have the opportunity to pray for the last 15 minutes of the day in designated, supervised areas of our school. Students interested in this opportunity for prayer should come to Student Services to pick up a prayer pass.

New Food Sharing Guidelines

FCPS Get2Green has announced new food sharing guidelines to help schools reduce waste and help address food insecurity. Food sharing reduces waste and allows students to donate unopened and uneaten food to fellow classmates or a local food bank or food pantry. Food sharing can reduce food waste in the cafeteria and help address food insecurity concerns.

The new guidelines add a process for schools to host share tables to share food within a school. There is also an updated Memorandum of Understanding for food sharing with external partner organizations and safety guidelines for ensuring healthy practices. Explore the updated FCPS Food Sharing Guidelines.
