The Cardinal Connection: CPES News Delivered to You

Dear Cardinal Families,

It's been a whirlwind of learning, growing, and creating, and I'm bursting with pride as I reflect on everything our students have accomplished. From those first wobbly steps in reading to the awe-inspiring learning that is posted in our hallways, from budding friendships to acts of kindness that light up the hallways, these young minds have been soaring this quarter.

Speaking of soaring, did you see the weather forecast for the end of the week? Temperatures are set to climb, promising a taste of the sun-drenched days to come. It's the perfect time to celebrate. As we wrap up this quarter, I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you. Your unwavering support, encouragement, and partnership are the wind beneath our wings, propelling our students and our school community forward. CPES is soaring to success!

Warmly,

Allison Hoak, Principal

Jon Kemmerer, Assistant Principal

POG

POG is all about students using and growing skills that help them succeed in ALL ASPECTS of life!

  • In all school subjects...
  • At home, in the community and with hobbies and interests….
  • In future careers, passions and relationships....

COMMUNICATOR: Sharing thoughts, feelings, ideas, and perspectives so others can understand us, and we can understand them.

CREATIVE & CRITICAL THINKER: Creating unique solutions to challenges that arise and making the world a better place by asking, "How can I make a difference?"

ETHICAL & GLOBAL CITIZEN: Recognizing similarities and differences among cultures, caring for our planet, and acting.

GOAL DIRECTED & RESILIENT INDIVIDUAL: Making healthy choices when choosing friends, managing time, and setting goals to accomplish important tasks.

COLLABORATOR: Working respectfully with others by honoring different viewpoints, ideas, and perspectives to achieve common goals.

HOW CAN YOU HELP AT HOME?

Ask questions that will help your child talk more deeply about school! Instead of, “What did you do today?” Try these questions:

  • What did you share?
  • What did you get better at?
  • What new ideas did you come up with?
  • What did you work with?

These will lead to specific answers of what they REALLY did and HOW they did it!

Schedule Change THIS Week

As the quarter comes to a close this week, we will have a 2-hour early release at 1:20 pm on Thursday, January 25 and there will be a Teacher Workday, no school for students, on Friday, January 26

Please Welcome Our New AART

JM

Hi there! My name is Jenna Murgia and I am thrilled to be joining Cunningham Park Elementary as the new Advanced Academic Resource Teacher. Previously, I was the Advanced Academic Resource Teacher at Braddock Elementary for three years. Before becoming an AART, I taught 1st grade, 2nd grade, and also level IV AAP in 4th grade.

I graduated with my bachelor's and master's degrees from James Madison University (go Dukes!) and have been living in Northern Virginia for the past 12 years.  I have two little boys ages 1 and 4 who keep us super busy. 🙂

I look forward to working with all grade levels to assist with bringing enrichment and rigorous lessons to every classroom. For any questions you may have, my email is jlmurgia@fcps.edu. I can't wait to meet you and your children!

Food Rescue at CPES!

We are looking for volunteers to collect items from the refrigerator and deliver them to Food for Others every Friday. If you are interested in volunteering, you can sign-up using our CPES Sign-Up Genius. Thank you for helping to support this wonderful program!

Outdoor Recess & Cold Weather

We plan on having recess during cold days. Please make sure that your child comes to school appropriately ready for time outside during recess. There are common sense factors that we consider when playing outdoors, including wind chill, sunshine and the length of time spent outdoors. Recess is typically 30 minutes, but it may be shortened in the event of wind chill advisories or warnings. Regardless, please make sure your child is bundled up because we will most likely venture outside! If students are not appropriately dressed for very cold weather (including shorts), teachers may elect to have that student stay inside.

  • No School, Teacher Workday 1/26
