The PTSO Spring Grant Application is Now Open!
This spring, the PTSO only has $3,000 to award in total for all grants but our hope is to do our best to accommodate your request or some portion of it.
Applications can be submitted by students, teachers, staff, and parents with a specific request for funding their club, organization, group, or department. Before submitting a grant request, applicants must have discussed/reviewed their request with a teacher, club sponsor, department head, or Director of Student Activities, Blair Smith, when applicable.
Please answer all questions with as much information as possible so the PTSO has a clear understanding of your request and how it will help staff and/or students at WT Woodson.

Woodson Library Parent Book Club
The Woodson Library is interested in hosting a parent book club. Our goal is to read Young Adult fiction or nonfiction titles followed by a discussion of the book titles in connection with Woodson High School Values.
Parents can select a book of their choice with the only requirement being that the book is a Young Adult title.
Please RSVP to Lisa Muir at lkmuir@fcps.edu if you are interested. Potential Meeting times: The Last TUESDAY of the Month via ZOOM at 7pm. The first meeting will be held via Zoom and we can move to meet in person if preferred.

Woodson Library Offers Community Service
If your student needs Community service hours for the National Honor Society or other service learning communities, the Woodson Library can help your student. Students can participate in HATS for ECHO in the Woodson library. Students will be making a hat or scarf on a round loom for the clothing closet located at ECHO, a shelter in Washington DC. (Crocheting or knitting is also accepted.)
We meet each TUESDAY, from 3:00 pm- 4:00 pm in the Woodson Library. (If schools are closed or no late buses, we do not meet.)
Students can make hats/scarves at home if they cannot stay after school. **See Mrs. Muir for more details on working from home. **

The Woodson Library is very pleased to announce our students made and donated 300 hats and scarves during the 22-23 school year. Way to go WOODSON!

D.C. Summer Cultural Homestay Program
Host a French Student! July 8 to July 30, 2024
Don’t miss a fun summer opportunity to welcome fifteen French high school students to our community and make new friends. Volunteer to provide one of these students housing, meals, and exposure to the English language and American culture for one, two or three weeks. Go on day excursions with students to a Nationals baseball game, The National Mall, Old Town Alexandria, Georgetown, Kennedy Center, U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress, Supreme Court, White House and Arlington National Cemetery. Attend welcome and farewell parties for visiting students. Earn FCPS service hours, too. Visit www.compass-usa.net for more information. Travel to France and Spain - Spring Break 2024
The trip - The ten day spring break 2024 trip combines the best of art and culture of Paris, Monaco and Barcelona along with the small town charm of Provence and the French Riviera. There are multiple UNESCO World Heritage Sites stops along the way including the Roman Pont du Gard, the Roman arena in Arles, the fortified town of Carcassonne and the architectural works of Gaudi in Spain. There is also a boat ride on the Seine in Paris, biking in Barcelona and free time to explore along the way. The cost - The trip includes flights to and from Washington DC to Europe, all transportation in the country by bus and a flight from Paris to Nice, daily breakfast and dinners, all lodging, tips for the guide and bus driver, a tour guide that stays with us on the bus and tour guides at the different sites. What is not included? You will need to purchase your own lunch for the day, your ice cream, and any souvenirs you wish to purchase.
The organizers - The trip is not an official school trip, but it is being organized by Woodson teachers and ACIS. ACIS is leader in overseas student travel and has been used by Woodson teachers for more than 24 years.

Partners for Safe Teen Driving Seminars
Attention all 10th grade students and their parents. All new drivers and parents must attend a state mandated traffic safety seminar, Partners for Safe Teen Driving. Please mark your calendar for the Woodson seminars for 2023-2024. Seminars will begin at 6:30 p.m. and will take place in the Woodson Auditorium.

Boys Varsity Basketball:
Boys basketball took care of business this week going 2-0 finishing the first run through of the Patriot District against South County and then their second game against Robinson. The SoCo game was tight, with Kollin Morgan delivering a standout second quarter, scoring nine points aggressively attacking the rim and also relentlessly hustling on defense, helped the team dominate in the paint. Great team ball movement all around lead to an impressive quarter and a solid lead at half. Despite SoCo tying the game in the fourth quarter, clutch plays, including a three from Kaylen Chilton and a great pass from Noah Limbago leading to a flush by Bryce Donovan, allowed the Cavs to regain a lead they never relinquished. Although the boys like to keep it interesting with free throws, the team's resilience down the stretch closing this game out was impressive and should provide key experience and confidence the rest of the season. The Donovan twins' aggressive play in the paint paved the way for a hard-fought win, with significant contributions from the bench.
Facing a spirited Robo team, the Cavs seized control early, and dominated throughout the game. The team’s defensive efforts lead to easy scoring opportunities the entire game. The Donovan twins continued their impressive defensive campaign in the paint and the rest of the Cavs contributed to the dominant effort leading to easy buckets by the team. Playing against a 3-2 zone defense, Theo Burke and Kaylen Chilton showcased their long-range shooting skills, while excellent ball movement culminated in a nice over the top feed from Will Taylor to Sean Donovan. The Cavs maintained complete control, exemplifying business-like efficiency, allowing Coach Craig to clear his bench in the win.
Following a challenging free throw night against SoCo, the team rebounded with a stellar performance at the stripe against Robo. Looking ahead, the Cavs face a tough schedule with an away game against AC on Wednesday and a home game on Friday against WestPo. Come cheer on the boys as they continue the second half of their season. Go Cavs!
Varsity Rifle:
The Woodson Rifle Team remains undefeated! In their 4th match of the season, Woodson Varsity athletes Ben Hays, Rushil Punukollu, Emma Cummings, Rachel Xu, and Stephen Labys defeated Robinson 1599 to 1585.8. The JV Team athletes Maddie Bajo, Chloe Lee, Mingmei Williams, Jackson Pugsley and Lavanya Mahajan did a great job and defeated Robinson JV 1546.7 to 1519.3.
The match against Centreville was postponed due to weather. The next scheduled match is February 1 vs Lake Braddock. Matches against Centreville and Landon are TBD.

The 2024 USAS VIRGINIA AIR Rifle Junior Olympics State Competition (JOSC) kicked off on January 13th. Ben Hays once again demonstrated his mastery of accuracy and time. He scored 596 for 60 shots (56/60 shots were 10s) in standing position and won the 2024 gold medal. Congratulations Captain Ben! |
Girls Varsity Gymnastics:
On Jan 10, Girls competed in the ‘Beauty and the Beast’ competition at Robinson High School where both gymnastics and wrestling competed simultaneously. Despite the chaos, Woodson placed second. Delaney Poole placed 1st on vault and Ari Smith placed 2nd on floor. On Jan 17, Girls placed 2nd (132.15) against SoCo, Annandale, Lake Braddock and Alexandria City. Ari Smith placed 2nd on bars (8.9) and first on floor (9.45). Amelia Mazur-Chang placed 3rd on both bars (8.8) and beam (9.225) and 2nd in all around (33.55). Allie Syron placed 6th (30.35) and Julianne Dee 7th (29.675) in all around. Congrats! Next meet is Jan 24th, Senior Night, at Lake Braddock.
Ice Hockey Club:
The Woodson Ice Hockey Club hosted Forest Park/Hylton on Friday night and also took time to honor the team’s seniors. The Senior Night ceremony went great with the team's seniors and their parents being recognized for many years of sacrifices to keep up with grueling and demanding hockey life. Unfortunately, the team faced a very strong Forest Park/Hylton opponent and was not able to secure the win. We are appreciative of the fans who braved the weather to come and support the team and cheer for the seniors when they were recognized!
The JV team was also in action on January 19th at the St. James when they took on a strong Washington Liberty JV team, but defeated them handily 8 to 2. The JV team is having a great season and shows that Woodson hockey has a very bright future.
The Varsity Team will take on Woodbridge on Friday night, January 26th, at Prince William Ice Center. Puck drop is at 6:00 pm.
The JV team plays Alexandria City at Tucker Road on Monday night, January 22nd, at 6:30.
As always, there is no cost to attend, so come out and support the team and watch some exciting hockey! Prince William Ice Center is located at 5180 Dale Blvd, Woodbridge, VA.

The Woodson Math Center opened on Wednesday, September 20th. Peer math tutors are available after school Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 3:00-3:45pm in B208. Look for the Math Center Flag. Tutors are excited to help students!

Attendance
Attendance is critical to student success in the classroom.
If your student will be absent from school, a parent/guardian must notify the attendance office.
Parents/guardians must contact the attendance office (703-503-4800) to report attendance; emails and online forms will no longer be accepted to notify our school of your student’s absence. Woodson is not monitoring or accepting any absences submitted via email. Due to an excessive number of forgeries, the online attendance form is currently disabled.

Congressional Art Competition
I want to take this opportunity to bring the Congressional Art Competition to your attention. This competition is open to all high school students who are residents of the 11th Congressional District, regardless of where they attend school. Public, private, and home-schooled students are all invited to participate, and I encourage any student who may be interested to submit an entry.
I look forward to hosting this event every year, as it affords students in our district the opportunity to showcase their artistic talent and creativity. Students do not need to create a new piece of art specifically for this competition – they are welcome to submit any piece from their portfolio. Past years’ competitions have included paintings, photographs, drawings, digital art, and more.
The winning piece will be displayed at the U.S. Capitol for one year, and with the permission of the artists, additional high-ranking pieces will be displayed in my Capitol Hill and district offices.
Individual arrangements will be made for the collection of the Best in Show piece to be transported to DC. Only the winning piece will be required to meet the established framing guidelines.

Hazel Health: Virtual Therapy Services
Teletherapy services will continue to be available for all FCPS high school students at no cost this summer. Sessions can be scheduled Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Hazel’s highly-qualified therapists specialize in speaking “teen.”
Caregivers must first opt in their students to access Hazel Health. Then, a caregiver or school counselor, social worker, or psychologist can refer the student to Hazel for services. Learn more on the FCPS teletherapy webpage.
Parent Information Lines Available in Eight Languages
 Parents who speak Amharic, Arabic, Chinese, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Urdu, or Vietnamese may call a telephone information line for general information about FCPS. View the list of phone numbers.
Lightspeed Parent Report on Child’s Device Activity
FCPS has tools to help parents know more about their child’s activity on any FCPS device. These tools are provided at no cost to families by Lightspeed, the school division’s internet content filtering service.
Parents may sign up for a weekly Parent Report, which will provide a list of the top sites your child visited. The report also offers parents the ability to sign up for free access to the Internet Use Parent Portal. Through the portal, parents may pause their child’s access to the internet on their FCPS device during non-school hours.

Free Tutoring from Tutor.com
All FCPS students continue to have unlimited access to live, 24/7, one-on-one online tutoring services through Tutor.com at no cost to families. Student participation is optional and parents/caregivers can opt their student(s) out of accessing the services. Get more information on the Tutor.com Online Tutoring Services webpage.
