THIS WEEK AT MADISON

WEEK OF 1/22/24

IMPORTANT INFO & EVENTS

Attendance Matters: Our children can suffer academically if they miss 10 percent of the school year or about 18 days. That can be just one day every two weeks, and that can happen before you know it.  Some absences are unavoidable. We understand that children will get sick and need to stay home occasionally. The important thing is to get your children to school as often as possible.  Sporadic absences, including absences for family trips, not just those on consecutive days of school, matter. Before you know it – just one or two days a month can add up to nearly 10 percent of the school year.  If too many absences occur, it is still a problem whether they are excused or unexcused because they represent too much lost learning time in the classroom.  If you are concerned about your child’s attendance, both excused and unexcused, you can access data through ParentVue.  Please reach out to your student’s counselor or visit this FCPS resource on Encouraging School Attendance if you need additional support.  We appreciate your partnership in prioritizing regular school attendance.  As a reminder, Student Attendance Summaries will be emailed to parents and students late next week.

Please, no food deliveries during the school day.  We are asking for your partnership to ensure the safety of our students and staff.  Please remind your students that we are not accepting food deliveries during the day for safety reasons. There will be signage on our exterior doors letting food delivery services know.  Thanks for your support.

January 25:  2 hr. Early release for students, end of 2nd Quarter

January 26:  Student Holiday

January 26: All current 9th-11th grade students are asked to have their initial course selections entered into StudentVue under Course Requests. These choices are only a rough draft and will be finalized when the student mets with their school counselor one on one. These meetings are scheduled:

  • 9th graders - February 29 - March 13
  • 10th graders - January 29 - February 7
  • 11th graders - February 8 - February 28

Ms. Anderson’s previous caseload will have their meetings with either Ms. Masich (former JMHS School Counselor) or Mr. Buckley.

We encourage parents to review the wealth of information on our JMHS Academic Advising Page. Our Academic Advising site includes course descriptions, graduation requirements, Dual Enrollment information, as well as summer school and Online Campus information. In addition, teachers are a great source of information.  Per FCPS policies, teachers are discouraged from telling students directly what next class they should take. However, we strongly encourage students and parents to reach out to the teachers for their opinions about next best choices

Student advising is one of the many critical tasks school counselors complete during the school year.  Please understand that the school counselors will be busy meeting with students all day during this time and will respond to non-advising requests as soon as they are able.

SRGS Medicine and Health Science program announcement

VDOE announced a relaunch of the Summer Residential Governor’s School Medicine and Health Sciences (MHS) program for Summer 2024. The program will be hosted by Radford University from June 23rd - July 20th, 2024, in conjunction with Blue Ridge Health Partnerships.

Since the application and selection process for other SRGS programs is well underway, VDOE has developed a special scoring and selection process for the MHS program for this school year only.

Given this unique circumstance, students who are interested in applying for this program may do so, regardless of whether they previously submitted an interest form. In addition, students who have already submitted an application for another academic program may submit a second application for this program. However, if accepted to both, students may only choose one.

10th and 11th grade students who are interested in applying for the Medicine and Health Sciences Program can find the application here.

Applications are due to Madison’s SRGS Contacts NO LATER THAN FEBRUARY 8th, 2024, by 3 PM. NO LATE SUBMISSIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

This application will be reviewed directly by the VDOE and decisions communicated directly to the student.

One School | One Community | One World

Madison High School strives to create and maintain an identity affirming learning environment where our students embrace, support, and encourage each other where multiple forms of identity (i.e. race, national origin, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, religion, or disability) are recognized and regarded as assets for teaching and learning. We work to ensure school is a place where students feel safe and can be themselves. We do not tolerate hate speech, racist speech, bias, or acts of discrimination in our school. We want all students to feel a sense of belonging. We want to see all students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.
