Ms. Mirnaly Vega

Dear Sleepy Hollow Families,

We hadn’t seen snow for two years, but we sure made up for it last week!  Snowfall causes a number of challenges for schools - most importantly student safety.  Sidewalks and entrances need to be cleared quickly and effectively before students arrive, and we are fortunate to have a top tier Custodial Team to ensure our building is ready for our students and staff tomorrow.  We thank Ms. Abena Kyerewa, Ms. Teresa Hernandez, Ms. Delmy Martinez and Mr. Thuan Tran for their dedication and commitment to the Sleepy Hollow community.  The team was at school Saturday morning to clear and de-ice sidewalks in preparation for school on Monday. We are excited to welcome our students back!

This Thursday marks the end of the second grading period.  We remind families that Thursday is a two-hour early dismissal and Friday there is no school for students, as teachers take time to complete progress reports for all students.

The next Parent Coffee will be held February 9th at Sleepy Hollow Library at 9:00 a.m. Unfortunately due to scheduling conflicts I will not be able to meet families on February 10th at the Willston Center. A new date is being arranged.

Warmest regards,

Mirnaly Vega and Tim Scesney

Principal and Assistant Principal

LIBRARY NEWS

Did you know our library’s fiction (chapter books) section is organized by genre?  In this way, books of similar type are grouped together (by genre) on the shelves so students can easily find something they like.  For instance, all the mystery books are together on one shelf, all the science fiction books are together on a different shelf, etc.  Talk with your child about their favorite types of books and encourage them to ask for help if they need finding something on our shelves.  Parents are also welcome to reach out to our librarian at beoswalt@fcps.edu to chat about books or ask questions.  Happy reading!

Opioid Awareness

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”
