🐝Hornet Happenings

glove with snow

Hello Halley Families,

It's been a short, snowy week! Students and staff were excited to welcome the first snow of the year and enjoyed sharing all their snow day stories. For information regarding weather cancellation procedures, please check here

As a reminder during these cold days, we are still seeing students coming to school and going to recess in shorts, sweatshirts instead of coats/jackets, and no winter gear (hats, gloves).  Please ensure your students are dressed for time outdoors.  If your family needs assistance with clothing or outerwear for the cold weather, contact our student services team at 703-551-5700.

As a reminder, Thursday, January 25, is a 2-Hour Early Release. Friday, January 26, is a student holiday and there will be no school.

Blessings and Joy,

Mrs. Peerman, Ms. Hubbard, and Mrs. Johnson-Tyler

Calendar Update for March 5 Presidential Primary

The Fairfax Board of Elections has requested schools to close on Tuesday, March 5, to accommodate the administration of the 2024 presidential primary election.

As a result, March 5 will be a school holiday for students and a virtual School Planning Day. As outlined in Regulation 4421, School Planning Days are directed by school-based administrators in order to devote time to school improvement efforts, including collaboration around data, common assessments, and responsive instruction. Central offices and school offices will remain open.

Keeping Our School

Community Healthy

We’ve noticed a recent rise in cases of RSV, the flu, COVID, and other viruses among students and staff. To encourage a healthy learning environment for everyone, we kindly ask that you please monitor your child's health daily for any signs of illness such as fever, cough, runny nose, sore throat, or fatigue. If they are experiencing any of these symptoms, please keep them home from school and consult a healthcare professional. As a staff, we are also mindful of these same criteria for work attendance. In addition, we will continue to practice rigorous cleaning and disinfecting protocols throughout the school. Visit FCPS' Health and Safety Guidance webpage for more tips.

Student Transfer Renewal Applications Open February 15

FCPS accepts online student transfer applications for the upcoming school year from February 15 through June 1.

A student transfer is valid for one year only.  FCPS notifies the enrolling parent by email in February if the student is eligible for student transfer renewal.

After notification is received, if the student continues to meet the same student transfer criteria as indicated on the original student transfer application, the enrolling parent may submit an online student transfer renewal application, required documentation, and non-refundable application processing fee.

For students no longer meeting the same student transfer criteria, a new transfer request may be submitted beginning March 1.

What Families Can Do to

Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”
