Atoms Weekly Recap

A recap from the week in winter sports:

Girls Basketball had a similar schedule to the boys. Due to Tuesday's snow, the varsity girls were the only team in action vs Mount Vernon. Some key injuries continue to plaque the Atoms as Mount Vernon got up early and didn't relinquish the lead in the victory over the Atoms. The Atoms turned around the next day and took on district foe Falls Church. The Jaguars swept the Atoms in all three games. The Atoms put on a strong surge late but it wasn't enough in the end. The Atoms did welcome back a key player from injury but the Jaguars were too much for the Atoms. The Atoms look to get off the snide as they travel to Hayfield Monday evening.

Boys Basketball were in action this week with two district games. The first pitted the Atoms against Mt. Vernon. Due to postponement and re-scheduling, the freshman and varsity boys were the only teams in action. The night started with the freshman Majors getting out early and running away from the Atoms to win big. The nightcap saw tight rims in the first half for both teams with the Atoms holding a 23-20 advantage. The second half saw a little more scoring and the Atoms hold a 53-51 lead with under a minute to play. Unfortunately, a turnover and a couple Major's baskets resulted in a heartbreaking loss the Atoms 55-53. The Atoms couldn't worry about it long as they hit the floor the next night with a rivalry game vs Falls Church. It was a clean sweep for the Atoms as the Freshman and JV teams ran away from the Jaguars. The varsity game saw the Atoms down early to an eager Jaguars team but after the first quarter score of 9-6. The Atoms took off and never looked back cruising to a 62-50 in district play. The Atoms welcome two time defending state champion Hayfield to Annandale Monday evening.

Swim/Dive was scheduled to be in the pool this evening for senior night but due to the snow the meet has been canceled. Next up for the Atoms is the National District Swim & Dive Championships at Audrey Moore Friday and Saturday.

Wrestling traveled to TJ Wednesday evening and came up short in two close matches vs Hayfield and TJ. The first match saw the Atoms take on TJ. Each match was competitive but TJ clipped the Atoms to come away with a 45-36 win. The second match was a back and forth affair with Hayfield. It was an intense match with each weight class and the Atoms holding a slim lead heading in the final couple matches. Unfortunately, those matches went the way of the Hawks and allowed them to squeak by the Atoms 37-36. The Atoms Dual Tournament at Annandale was canceled due to the snow. They're on the mat two final times this week before the National District Tournament February 1 at Lewis.

Indoor Track had the week off but have one more tune up on Saturday, January 27 before the National District Championship Meet in February.

Gymnastics continues to show their determination to get better after their meet at South County Wednesday evening. A few of the gymnasts came away from the meet with a new personal best as they head into their final meet of the season at Lake Braddock on Wednesday. This is their last match before the district championships on Monday, January 29.

Atoms Yard Signs

As we continue through the 2023-2024 school year, we aim to bring the community of Annandale closer together. We are continuing that recognition as all of our Winter student-athletes have been provided a yard sign of their own!

Be on the lookout and when you see one make sure to show your support of the time and effort they are putting in to making the Annandale community proud!

Atoms Boosters Concession Stand Help

Special Ask... Atoms After School Snack Bar

As many of you know, the Atoms Athletic Boosters has been able to open our concessions stand after school for your children to grab a bite to eat prior to heading to their activities. If your schedule allows, please consider volunteering 1 day a week or even just 1-2 days a month. The hours are 3:15-4:15. This is a rare benefit in Fairfax County that we are able to provide for our kids, but we can’t do it without parent help. Please contact at odessapmurray@gmail.com or (703) 626-9647 if interested in helping.
