Photo of Dr. Reid visiting a 1st grade classroom

Little Run welcomed FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid on Thursday morning. Dr. Reid had the opportunity to visit many of our youngest Roadrunners during her visit. In the above photo, Dr. Reid conversed with a 1st grader as the student shared about an experience making snowmen out of clay. Dr. Reid responded by asking thought-provoking questions. "Why aren't you building the snowmen with snow? What would happen if the snow came inside?" Little Run is proud of the daily teaching and learning opportunities surrounding our students. We have so much to be proud of at Little Run and are grateful to have our superintendent visit our fantastic school.

A Message from the Little Run Admin Team

Photo of the Little Run Admin Team

Dear Little Run Families,

We hope you all enjoyed the surprise snow days this week. While it cut our week a bit short, it offered a much-needed chance to build snowmen, have snowball fights, and cozy up with hot cocoa and good books. We can't deny it: watching the snow fall is always magical!

Speaking of magic, we had a special visitor to our school this week: FCPS Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid! She spent time with our preschool, kindergarten, and first-grade classes, and everyone was thrilled to meet her. We couldn't have been prouder of our students as they demonstrated their love and excitement for learning.

And did we mention our fabulous book room? Dr. Reid stopped by this cozy atmosphere where shelves overflowed with books, just like a mini Barnes & Noble! It's truly a testament to the dedication of our teachers and staff, who create such welcoming and inspiring learning spaces for our students.

As we wrap up the second quarter, we hope everyone has a beautiful weekend to recharge and get ready for a strong finish to the semester. Remember our early release on Thursday, January 25, and the teacher work day on Friday, January 26.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend, and we look forward to seeing our students next week!

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, Principal

Lesley Hassen, Assistant Principal

Consider asking your child(ren) one or more of the following questions:

  • What does it look and sound like to be respectful in the bathroom?
  • How did you show responsibility in the bathroom this week?
  • What does it mean to be ready outside of the bathroom?

Meet Our Little Run Mental Health Team

Photo of Little Run Mental Health Team

Little Run ES is proud to have a top-notch mental health team supporting our students and families. Tiffany Sutton (school counselor), Karen Spradlin (school social worker), and Rianna Taylor (school psychologist) work alongside one another to provide students and families the support and services needed to be successful both in and out of school. Our mental health team members provide whole class lessons, meet with small groups of students to support social-emotional learning, check in with students individually, and so much more. Please feel free to email them with questions or wonderings, as they are eager to help in any way.

The Positivity Project at Little Run

Positivity Project Logo

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Social Intelligence. Social intelligence means you are aware of other people’s thoughts and feelings. You understand why they do things.

Social intelligence refers to a person’s ability to understand and manage interpersonal relationships. It is distinct from a person’s IQ or “book smarts.” It includes an individual’s ability to understand, and act on, the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors of other people. This type of intelligence can take place “in the moment” of face-to-face conversations but also appears during times of deliberate thinking. It involves emotional intelligence and self-awareness.

Social intelligence helps individuals build relationships -- and is important to numerous aspects of a person’s life. It allows an individual to form friendships and alliances. And it assists a person against being taken advantage of. People with social intelligence can “read” other people’s faces and know what motivates them. Social intelligence builds over time and as a person ages. In this sense, it is similar to the character strength of perspective.

To practice and encourage the character strength of social intelligence with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2), where together you will watch a video, read a quote, and talk about the answers to three questions.

What is the Student Ambassador Program?

The mission of the Student Ambassador Program is to help all students feel connected and included at school. The program aims to foster friendships between students and their peers.

Student Ambassador Programs:

Are student-led programs that provide ambassadors with an opportunity to lead their school in creating a welcoming and caring school community.

Over the next few weeks, our staff may recommend your child to become a Student Ambassador.  If so, you will receive a permission form.  Please complete and return to your child's teacher or you may email the form to Tiffany Sutton, School Counselor at tsutton@fcps.edu

Spring SEL Screener

We are excited to have your child take part in the Spring SEL Screener beginning February 28 - March 15. It is designed to help educators understand the social-emotional competencies of their students and how they are supported in classrooms and schools."

Here are sample SEL Survey Questions for your review.

If you would like your child to be opted-out of the screener, here is a copy of the SEL Screener Notification and Opt-Out Form. Click the link below to access translated versions. You may return the signed opt-out form to the main office or email the form to tsutton@fcps.edu

Opioid Awareness: What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse

FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.

What can families do?

  • Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
  • Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
  • Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage
  • Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
  • Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Visit the FCPS website for more information.
