Specialist Spotlight - Literacy

Building Fluency When Reading at Home

Reading fluency is a person’s ability to read correctly and quickly with intonation and expression in a natural flow that sounds like talking.  Fluent readers have developed automaticity which means that they can read words automatically.  This is important because the reader can focus their attention on understanding the message rather than decoding the text.

Here are some activities you can do at home with your child to help with fluency.

  • Echo Reading – You read one sentence or phrase at a time and have your child echo back the same sentence or phrase while following the words with their eyes or finger.
  • Paired or Buddy reading- Sit with your child and take turns reading aloud. Your reading provides a model of what fluent reading sounds like.  Then, have your child reread the same page you just read.
  • Choral Reading- Read the text aloud at the same time. Poems and song lyrics work well.
  • Repeated Readings- Encourage your child to read favorite books over and over. They should be able to read these known books quickly and easily.
  • Record It- Your child can create their own audiobooks by using your phone or a recording app to record themselves reading. What a great way to hear how fluent they sound when reading.

Choose a favorite story and read parts of the story with different voices.

Silly, Scary, Whisper, Yelling, Adult, Baby, Teenager.

 Have FUN!
