Winter weather & appropriate Clothing

As we enter the winter months, cold weather will be in the forecast. We want to make sure all students are prepared for the cold weather as they wait at the bus stop, play outside for recess, and make their way home at the end of the day. Please make sure you are sending students to school with their winter coats, gloves, hats, and scarfs. If your child is in need of a winter coat, please reach out to the school office at 703-503-2700.

Please see the National Weather Service (NWS) website for information on cold weather safety.

School Safety Drills

At  Bailey’s Upper ES, our number one responsibility is to ensure the safety of our students and staff at all times. We continually work with county leaders to ensure coordinated responses to potential safety concerns and we practice emergency drills on a regular basis throughout the school year. We will hold fire drills, Lockdown Drills, Bus Evacuation and Tornado drills periodically throughout the year.

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

Due to the two snow days and the delay this past week, we rescheduled our second lockdown drill. The lock down drill will now take place the week of January 22nd at Bailey’s Upper ES.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child. Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

During a lockdown drill:

  1. All students stay in place with a teacher or staff member.

  2. Students and teachers remain in locked classrooms, unobservable from outside (lights-off, window blinds closed, door windows obscured with paper) and outside potential lines of fire.)

  3. Students and staff members disregard fire alarms.

  4. No one enters or exits the school, except public safety personnel.

  5. Persons in trailers remain in locked trailers.

Parent/Guardian class lunch visit Schedule

Parents are invited to join their student(s) for a special lunch at school on an assigned day! This is a great opportunity for parents to come in for lunch with their child. Please see the full schedule to view when your child’s class is scheduled for a lunch visit.

We encourage parents to eat the same lunch as their child either packed or purchased. On the day of your child’s lunch, please arrive 5-10 minutes early so you can sign-in at the office. All lunches will be hosted in room 249. If you choose to buy lunch from the cafeteria, adult pricing is $4.75 and may be paid in cash. Click here for more information on purchasing lunch

Current and upcoming Assessments at Bailey’s Upper

iReady testing for most students was completed this week. Make-ups will conclude next week. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) adopted iReady assessments as an academic universal screener for all elementary school students in grades 1-6. The iReady assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test.

WIDA Testing will begin January 22nd. Federal legislation requires that all students identified as English learners (ELs) are assessed annually to monitor their progress and proficiency in English. In Virginia, all divisions use the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs for this purpose.

All ELs, including those who have opted out of EL services, participate annually in the ELP assessment until they reach English language proficiency criteria (ELP level 6). Alternate assessment formats are available for certain students with disabilities.

If you have any questions regarding upcoming assessments, please contact Denise Cash-Pinckney or Nicole Cassidy our School Testing Coordinators at 703-503-2700
