Floris Families,

It was another great week at Floris. Kudos to our 4th grade beginning strings students and Sean Arzaga and Tori Field, our Floris Strings Teachers, for the many hours of hard work, planning, and practice to ensure a great concert on Tuesday evening. Extra kudos to the students who taught some of us how to play and perform in 5 minutes. So much fun!!

We enjoyed celebrating our School Counselors, Sarah de Kramer and James Duffield, throughout the week. National School Counseling Week, sponsored by ASCA, was created to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and highlight the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success. We are so grateful for each of them and all they do for our Eagles.

The February PTA Meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, February 21, at 6:30pm on Zoom. Rachel Carson Middle School Principal Gordon Stokes will be a special guest at the PTA meeting. Please enter your questions and/or topics you want to hear more about from Principal Stokes in this Google Form by next Friday, February 16, to allow us to best prepare for the meeting.

Next week Floris will be celebrating Kindness Week. Please see the spirit days listed above. Students and staff will be focusing on kindness throughout the week in different ways.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Food Sharing Program

What:

Floris is excited to announce that our school, in collaboration with the Floris PTA, has started a Food Share Program in the café.

Why:

  • Food sharing diverts food from the trash and allows students’ unopened and uneaten cafeteria food to be donated to fellow classmates or a local food bank or food pantry.
  • Food sharing can reduce food waste in the cafeteria and help address food insecurity concerns.

How:

  • Unopened cafeteria food should be shared through the school’s Share Table first.
  • Students can then visit the school Share Table and select additional items to eat with their lunch.
  • All food remaining on the table or in the fridge on Friday afternoon will go to Embry Rucker Homeless Shelter in Reston.
  • This program is only for cafeteria food. Unfortunately, we are not able to accept food from home.

Lunar New Year

🐉 Wishing good fortune to those in our community who celebrate Lunar New Year!

The Lunar New Year is a holiday that marks the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar, which is the calendar traditionally used in many east Asian countries including China, Vietnam, Singapore, and South Korea. In these and other Asian countries, it is one of the most important holidays of the year. The Lunar New Year is all about ushering in luck and prosperity with family. Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday is a holy day of prayer and fasting in many Western Christian denominations. It marks the beginning of Lent, a time of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving leading up to Easter. Many Christians attend special Ash Wednesday church services, at which churchgoers receive ash on their foreheads. Ash Wednesday derives its name from this practice.
