Principal's Message |
Greetings Tiger Families!
This past Wednesday our dedicated and talented English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) department hosted our annual ESOL Family Night in our library. The evening included an opportunity to share important information and resources, spend time together to build community and to enjoy some food and drink. Did you know that 15% of Twain Middle School students receive some level of ESOL services? The rich diversity of the community we serve and the students and staff who enter our building every day is such a great strength that results in a unique learning experience for all Twain Tigers. In December we held our first annual International Night, which highlighted some of the amazing stories and experiences of our students. Our students also benefit from strong Spanish, French, and Chinese World Language programs that broaden their understanding of the greater world and build skills to aid in communication and collaboration across cultures. Ms. Goetz’s Chinese students are part of a Global Classroom Project (GCP) partnership with a sister school in Taiwan that allows students divided by great distance, but connected by technology to grow in their understanding of other cultures and work together around a sustainable development goal. Our students’ goal focuses on tackling hunger and food insecurity. By leveraging the diversity of our community and modern technology that makes it easier to connect over long distance, we hope our students can continue to develop into the internationally minded global citizens they strive to be.
Sincerely,
Matt

Mentors Needed for FCPS Students
If you are enthusiastic about making a difference and believe in the power of mentorship, please consider mentoring a student in FCPS!
FCPS MentorWorks helps eliminate gaps in opportunity, access, and achievement through mentoring. Every student in FCPS should be able to name an adult in their community they can talk to. A mentor is a caring, responsible person, interested in spending time with a student, and encouraging them to develop their strengths and capabilities. A mentor does not provide academic support.
MentorWorks is looking for non-school-based staff to offer at least 30 minutes of their time a week to students.
Learn more about mentoring in a Zoom chat with an experienced mentor. See the schedule of upcoming sessions. Sign up to mentor by completing the Mentor Registration Form. Learn more about mentoring in the FAQ for FCPS Central Office Mentors or email Mentoring Specialist Martha Macdonald.
