The no snow streak has ended and we had our first snow day in two years!

Wishes Do Come True

Did you know that in the DMV, we had gone nearly 730 days without any measurable snow?! Well, that long streak ended this week as we had our first (and second!) snow day in 2 years!

Dear Willow Springs Families,

What an exciting week this has been as we experienced our first two snow days in two years! Our students brought so much joy and energy into the building as they shared stories of playing in the snow. We look forward to hearing even more stories when we return to school next week. Speaking of next week, temperatures are expected to rise into the 50s in less than a week!

Next week will bring the end of the 2nd quarter and we will have a 2 hour early dismissal on Thursday and a Teacher Workday on Friday. Dismissal on Thursday will be at 2 PM. Our teachers are hard at work wrapping up assessments and preparing Progress Reports which will be available to you soon.

We wish all of you a safe, warm, and playful weekend. Thank you for sending us your best every day! #Willow Pride

Dylan Taylor, Principal

Ipsa Stringer, Assistant Principal

Did you know Willow Springs has a school garden and a garden club?

School Gardens

Did you know that Willow Springs has a thriving school garden and a gardening club? According to research done by Cornell University, the benefits of school gardening are many, including increased nutrition awareness, higher learning achievements, increased environmental awareness, increased life skills, improved wellness building social connections and community.

To learn more about school gardens, we invite you to read this recent article from the Fairfax County Master Gardeners publication. You will see that our school garden is highlighted in the article. STEAM teacher, Carley Maltes-Fisher, contributed to the writing of this very informative piece. Well done!

WSES has a green team that meets on the first Wednesday of each month.

Green Team Meeting Soon

We've started a Green Team this year to focus on environmental improvements at the school. All are welcome - students, parents, grandparents, teachers.

The club meets the first Wednesday every month before school, from 8-9 AM in the cafeteria. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, February 7th. If you have any questions, contact our STEAM teacher, Carley Fisher-Maltese at cfishermalte@fcps.edu.

All parents are invited to join our next Watch DOGS meeting and become a school volunteer.

Tuesday Meeting

The next WATCH D.O.G.S.® meeting will be on Tuesday, 1/23 from 6-7 PM in our school cafeteria.

Moms are invited to participate as well to support students, teachers, and our school! We'd love to see you there!

Please remind your child to follow the rules and routines for good cafeteria behavior.

Cafeteria Reminders

Lunchtime is often one of students' favorite times of day. It provides a break from the rigors of learning and gives students the opportunity to see friends and socialize.

Lunchtime is also a less structured time when each class is not under the direct supervision of a teacher. It is important that each student understand the rules and expectations in the cafeteria. Here are some helpful reminders to talk with your child about:

  • Go to the bathroom BEFORE lunch.
  • Don't share food or touch other people's food.
  • Stay in your seat and raise your hand if you need something.
  • Use kind words that are appropriate for school.

Parents, please remember that food should not be packed in glass containers as they can break and create an unsafe situation.
