- Thursday, January 25th is a 2hr Early Release. We will release students at 1:40pm

 Bucknell Elementary School will be hosting our second virtual family engagement opportunity on Wednesday, January 24, from 6:30-7:30 pm. The topic will be “Understanding Essential Math Standards and Ways to Support at Home.” Please join us to learn more about how you can support your child with their learning both inside and outside of the classroom!
These sessions will take place on Zoom and will be recorded in order to be shared with community members.

Free Family Market - Wed., January 24th at 10:30am Until Food Runs Out - Door 9
 We look forward to inviting families to our FREE Family Market on Wednesday, December 13th at 10:30am until food runs out. This time is earlier than our normal time and will be located at Door 9, which is the SACC Room! It’s best to come early and please remember to bring your own bags.”We look forward to seeing you there!
This week we will have red potatoes, onions, mushrooms, romaine, cranberries, mangoes, cauliflower, pineapple, yucca, apple sauce, coconut milk, white rice, cornbread mix, salmon, mac and cheese, and pinto beans.

TJ TECHSTRAVAGANZA 2024
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is hosting their 20th Annual TECHSTRAVAGANZA. TJHSST Techstravaganza is a FREE hands-on STEM fair that attracts thousands of attendees from the DMV area every year. Over 300 TJ student and teacher volunteers engage students in STEM activities, which include lava lamps, banana DNA extraction, robotics, rocketry demonstrations, programming workshops, and other STEM exhibits. The event will take place in-person at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (see map) on Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 10 AM to 4 PM.
Registration is free. TJHSST is providing free transportation to make the event more accessible to students. More information about the even can be found at http://tjtechstrav.org./.

La Escuela Secundaria de Ciencia y Tecnología Thomas Jefferson organiza su vigésima edición anual de TECHSTRAVAGANZA. TJHSST Techstravaganza es una feria práctica GRATUITA de STEM que atrae a miles de asistentes del área del DMV cada año. Más de 300 estudiantes y maestros voluntarios de TJ involucran a los estudiantes en actividades STEM, que incluyen lámparas de lava, extracción de ADN de plátano, robótica, demostraciones de cohetes, talleres de programación y otras exhibiciones STEM. El evento se llevará a cabo en persona en la Escuela Secundaria de Ciencia y Tecnología Thomas Jefferson (ver mapa) el sábado 18 de mayo de 2024 de 10 a. m. a 4 p. m.

West Potomac Girls Basketball: Youth Night Game
 On behalf of the entire West Potomac Girls Basketball Staff and all our players, we would like to invite all Bucknell students, players, staff, and community to attend our "Youth Night" event on Friday, January 26th at West Potomac High School. All 3 levels (Freshman, JV, and Varsity) will compete against Woodson High School, with games being held at 4:30, 5:45, and 7:30. There will be lots of free giveaways, chances to win prizes, and an opportunity to meet the Varsity team after the final game of the night. This has been a great event for us in the past and we hope to have a big crowd in attendance again this year!

What Families Can Do to Fight Drug Misuse
FCPS is committed to raising awareness about the opioid epidemic with our educators, parents/caregivers, and students. Together, we can help ensure our students thrive.
What can families do?
- Show you disapprove of underage drinking and other drug misuse. More than 80% of young people ages 10-18 say their parents are the leading influence on their decision whether to drink.
- Show you care about your child’s health, wellness, and success.
- Show you are a good source of information about alcohol and other drugs. Find helpful resources on the FCPS Opioid Awareness webpage.
- Pay attention to your child and discourage risky behaviors.
- Build your child’s skills and strategies for avoiding drinking and drug use. Talk with your child about what they would do if faced with a decision about alcohol and drugs, such as texting a code word to a family member or practicing how they will say, “No thanks.”

Free Resources for Families
National Mentoring Month
 Imagine a world where young people feel empowered, encouraged, and understood. Mentors can make that world a reality by helping young people find and follow their passions, excel in school, and thrive wherever they are.Learn more about Mentoring Month.
Research has shown that young people with at least one trusted mentor are less likely to skip school, less likely to use illegal drugs or drink alcohol, and more prepared to enter college or the workforce. Yet one in three children lack a mentor.
All it takes is one person to serve as a trusted adult to help change a young person’s path in life. Mentors provide attention, support, and enrichment, and help connect their mentees to resources that may help them on their journey in life.
FCPS’ MentorWorks program matches mentors with students in schools near where they live or work. They meet for at least 30 minutes a week. Learn more about how to become a mentor for an FCPS student. Quarter End, Early Release, and Student Holiday
Thursday, January 25, is the last day of the quarter and a two-hour early release for students. Also, schools are closed for students on Friday, January 26, for a teacher work day. See the complete school year calendar.
