BMP Celebrating Cultural Stories

Thank you to all our volunteer readers, BMP families, and staff who participated in our Celebrating Cultural Stories Night. Stories were read in German, Urdu, Russian, Mandarin, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Nahuatl, Vietnamese, and English! We love celebrating the many languages spoken by our Bren Mar Park families. Our school library has a diverse collection of books and our school librarian, Christine Watson, continues adding books in various languages each year that students are able to check out.

Advanced Academics & Young Scholars

Advanced Academics is:

  • Designed to develop the strengths and talents of all students
  • Involves a commitment to providing rigor to all students
  • A continuum of services to meet a broad range of student needs, focused on critical and creative thinking lessons
  • A holistic approach that uses NNAT (grade 1), CogAT (grade 2), student work portfolios and other information to determine strengths and a need for increased depth, complexity and pace of instruction

Young Scholars is:

  • Designed to identify and nurture students with high academic potential who may face additional barriers to access and success in Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) and courses. This may include students who are the first in their family to attend college in the U.S., English language learners, students who are economically disadvantaged, and students who are twice exceptional.
  • A strategy to increase access to rigor found in:
    • The FCPS strategic plan.
    • The Closing the Achievement Gap framework.
  • In addition to, not a replacement of, advanced learning opportunities.

Specialist Spotlight - Library

Hi Families!  The library is a busy place!  K, 1, and 2 just started a unit on the Virginia Reads books.  Virginia Reads is a state-wide organization started by librarians right here in Fairfax County.  They choose really great books featuring diverse characters.  K-2 will be reading and discussing 10 books, then voting on our favorite one.  Ask your child to tell you about the wonderful story we read each week in the library.

3rd, 4th, and 5th graders are learning about how to use the library resources for research.  They’ve learned about starting research by using databases like World Book or Pebble Go, how to take notes so they don’t plagiarize, and 4th and 5th will even be learning about how to cite their sources!  Each grade will be doing a research project that they begin in the library.

As I said, the library is a busy place, and we can always use volunteers. If you are ever interested in helping out in the library, please email me at clwatson@fcps.edu.  I LOVE volunteers!  Happy reading!
