Dogwood Emblem

Dear Dogwood Dragons,

Snow is here!!! I hope you all stayed warm, yet spent time enjoying sledding and all the joys of a good snow storm.

Thursday, January 17, 2024, we are having a coat drive. We will have 500 brand new donated coats in our lobby from Kids R First and Stohlman Subaru. All students will need to go home their typical way. We cannot manage changing the dismissal for students. Please greet your child your typical way, then come to Dogwood between 4:00-5:30 PM and pick out a brand new coat for any child who needs one. You may get one coat per child.

Today we had a 2 hour delay due to snow and we had students brought to school early and left in freezing temperatures. Please never drop off your students on the curb and leave. Always ensure they are in the school so we are sure they are with trusted adults.

You can always see county decisions about school closures or delays on the county website www.fcps.edu and on our news. When there is a delay, the start times of school are aligned with the delay. We typically open doors at 8:35 AM. If there is a 2 hour delay we open doors at 10:35 AM. If the bus picks up students at 8:10 AM, they will be picked up at 10:10 AM instead. On two hour delays we do not serve breakfast.

Please call us if you have any questions,

Kate Beckner

Proud Principal, Dogwood ES.

Dogwood Winter Coat Giveaway

Dogwood has teamed up with Kids-R-First and Stohlman Subaru to present a Winter Coat Giveaway event for children of our Dogwood families.

We will have over 500 new coats, sized kids 2-16, for you to choose from in the Dogwood Main Lobby on Thursday, January 18, from 4-5:30pm.

If your child needs a new winter coat, please attend with your child or children. Only 1 coat per child. We highly recommend your children coming with you to try on the coat to ensure correct fitting for the season. Hot chocolate and snacks will be provided as well!

Attention all 6th grade parents!

If you missed Curriculum Night at Langston Hughes Middle School last week, please join us tomorrow, Thursday, January 18, from 6:30-8:00 pm at Dogwood ES- Library for a presentation on the “Transition to Middle School.” This presentation will be provided in English and Spanish and will cover important topics, such as block scheduling, “Blue and Gray” days, and what a day in the life of a middle schooler is like. We look forward to seeing you. This event is only for families who have children in 6th grade.

Learning Under the Stars

Do you have a student in Early Head Start, Preschool, Kindergarten, First  or Second grade, if so please join us on January 24th from 5-6:30 for Learning Under the Stars. This is a fun, family event where you will have dinner with other families from your child’s class and learn some simple games to play at home to help support your child’s learning. In addition, you will learn about some community resources for your child. Flyers will be coming home soon. Please sign up. We hope to see you all for an evening of connection and learning. Sign up is required in order for us to have enough  food for the event. Students that attend must come with a parent and/or guardian.

Learning Under the Stars

🙋‍♂️ Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow!

Children who show up for school regularly develop fundamental reading and math skills while building a habit of good attendance that will carry them into college and careers. Research shows that children who were chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade were far less likely to read proficiently at the end of 3rd grade.
