Greetings, Irving Families!

We are delighted to introduce Janelle Fontaine (pictured above), our new Student Services Office Assistant working with attendance. Ms. Fontaine has previous school office experience in New Mexico. We are excited to have her join our team and look forward to having you meet her.

Continuing with a theme of new - we are preparing for our newest sport - track! We are in the very EARLY stages of preparing for track. If your child would like to participate in track, please be sure to complete this registration form. If your child did NOT participate in cross country, they must have a completed middle school sports physical in order to participate - please use this physical form only. Please turn in physical forms into the main office and they will be given to our Athletic Coordinator, Ms. Roz Wilson.

To ensure we can have a track team and participate this year, we are currently in need of at least 3 track coaches. If you or someone you know is interested in coaching, please have them email me their resume. We will share more information about track very soon via upcoming interest meetings.

We hope you have a great long-weekend. If you are hoping for snow, don’t forget to do your snow dances and should we actually get snow, please remember to check the FCPS website for any updates if needed.

Take Care!

Cindy Conley

Principal

New Attendance Office Assistant and Attendance Reminders

We thank you for your patience the last few months as we have hired a new Office Assistant to support Attendance . Please help us to welcome Janelle Fontaine, who started with us last week. A few attendance reminders:

  • Please make sure your child arrives to school on time each day. You can report an absence by calling 703-912-4545 or online here.
  • If your student needs to leave early, please send a note with them the day of with the time they are leaving and have them stop by Student Services before school to get a pass. Please remember your ID when you come to pick up your child. If someone other than a parent or guardian is picking up your child, please explain this in your note.
  • Please plan trips during times when school is not in session. Excused absences include: illness, death in the family, medical appointments, observances of a religious holiday. Unexcused absences include: vacations, child care situations, nonschool-related activities, missed school bus. Just because an absence is pre-arranged does not mean it is excused.

Irving Invasion Field Trip to West Springfield High School

If you have an 8th grade student and have not signed the permission slip for them to go to West Springfield HS on January 16th, please sign this and email it to magollinger@fcps.edu. We want to make sure all our students can attend.

Rising 9th Grade Course Selection

Please remember that course selection sheets were due today to your child’s English teacher. If you have not seen this already, please ask your child about the sheet and remind them to turn it in right away. Also, if your child is interested in participating in the Leadership or Sports Leadership classes in 9th grade, they need to complete this application by 1/19.

Student Laptop Damage Fees

There are fees associated with repairing or replacing damaged or lost student laptops, as well as lost power cords. Those fees are in the MySchoolBucks school store:

  • Screen Replacement: $85
  • Laptop Replacement: $472
  • Power Cord Replacement: $23

Lightspeed Classroom Management

As part of our commitment to creating a safe and focused learning environment for our students, our school is using a classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. We are continuing to expand our use over the coming weeks. This tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:

  • Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
  • Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
  • Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.

We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school. Please note that student devices will not be monitored outside of school hours. The regular filters remain in place on school devices, but once they are home, teachers cannot monitor students. As parents, we would like to encourage you to sign up for your own Lightspeed reports, which will allow you to see how your child is spending time on the computer during and after school hours.

Library News

Seventh grade English students began the new school year with visits to the library.  Their goal was to find a narrative nonfiction book that they’ll use for their English book project.  Most everyone visited the library and found a book.  Those students who were absent during the class visit, or those students who would prefer to switch the book that they borrowed, will have a day to return to the library so that they have an additional opportunity to borrow a narrative nonfiction title.  [Just a reminder for any parents who may be trying to help their child select a book:  A true account that is written in a narrative form and reads like a novel (with a beginning, middle and end) are the type of books that they’ll need.]

In other news, the after school book club, Readers Unite will be discussing their third book of the school year on Monday, January 22nd.  And, the Battle of the Books teams are continuing to meet, read and practice, preparing for the school tournament on March 15th that will determine which of our school teams will represent Irving in the county-wide competition.
