Advanced Academics & Young Scholars

Advanced Academics is:

  • Designed to develop the strengths and talents of all students
  • Involves a commitment to providing rigor to all students
  • A continuum of services to meet a broad range of student needs, focused on critical and creative thinking lessons
  • A holistic approach that uses NNAT (grade 1), CogAT (grade 2), student work portfolios and other information to determine strengths and a need for increased depth, complexity and pace of instruction

Young Scholars is:

  • Designed to identify and nurture students with high academic potential who may face additional barriers to access and success in Advanced Academic Programs (AAP) and courses. This may include students who are the first in their family to attend college in the U.S., English language learners, students who are economically disadvantaged, and students who are twice exceptional.
  • A strategy to increase access to rigor found in:
    • The FCPS strategic plan.
    • The Closing the Achievement Gap framework.
  • In addition to, not a replacement of, advanced learning opportunities.

Specialist Spotlight - Counseling

Hello BMP Families and Happy 2024! The year just started, and our Mustangs are learning so much during our counseling lessons.

We started our year learning about Goals. Students were able to discuss their goals for 2024 and activities or best practices that they want to learn, try again, or continue to do this year. For example, how to spread kindness, be a good listener, clean up more, learn something new and have a lot of fun this year. It is essential for our children to set goals for themselves because it helps increase their confidence in themselves and their abilities.

During our counseling lessons, we also learned more about Martin Luther King (MLK) Jr. and Day of Service. Students learned that MLK Jr. was a peaceful person who used his voice and words to show kindness. We talked about his famous speech “I Have a Dream”, and students worked on an activity sharing their dreams to make the world a better place.

Winter Weather & School Impact

When bad weather or other emergency situations occur, it may be necessary for FCPS to cancel, delay, or close schools early. Parents and students should have a well-communicated plan in place in the event of these emergency situations. Children need to know where to go or what to do if a parent will not be home.  In the case of emergency for a weather-related closing, delay, or early dismissal, the FCPS website will be updated first, and will automatically include an alert at the top of each page with the appropriate information. This information will remain posted until normal operations have resumed.

Information can be found at https://www.fcps.edu/resources/safety-and-transportation/weather-cancellation-procedures
