Annandale High School Athletics and Activities

Atom Nation

Week 2 of the New Year saw our first postponement of games but the Atoms kept their cool and were prepared for the movement of games. Despite the missed day of events, there was still plenty of exciting action by the Atoms this week. It's hard to believe that the winter season is starting to wind down as several programs have their National District Championship Meets before the end of February. Make sure to not miss out on the action by getting your booster pass and supporting the Atoms!

Atoms Weekly Recap

A recap from the week in winter sports:

Girls Basketball had two more district games this week. The first game of the week saw the Atoms host TJ Thursday evening. TJ came into Robert Hardage Gymnasium and ran away with a complete sweep over the Atoms. The Atoms played hard on all three levels but couldn't catch TJ on the scoreboard. Friday evening saw a back to back night as the Atoms hosted perennial district champion Edison to Annandale. The night started with the freshman falling behind early and trailing at halftime. The second half saw a different game as the Atoms came out, took over, and put the Eagles away to get the win. JV played a competitive game and battled back from multiple deficits before falling in the fourth quarter. Varsity saw the Eagles come out early, vs an Atoms team missing a key member, and put the Atoms away with a score of 28-7 at halftime. The Atoms fought hard in the second half but could catch up to the Eagles before the final buzzer. The Atoms host Mt. Vernon Tuesday evening.

Boys Basketball played two more district games this week vs TJ and Edison. The Atoms hit the road for TJ Wednesday evening. The night started with an exciting win by the freshman Atoms 41-38. JV followed with a hard fought effort but short on the result falling to TJ. The nightcap saw a back and forth game lead to 2 point halftime game in favor of TJ. The second half saw the same throughout the third quarter but TJ ultimately pulled away in the 4th quarter to get the win. Friday evening had the Atoms back on the bus at Edison. It was a clean sweep for Edison on the night. Freshman and JV kept it close early but the Eagles ran away late. Varsity saw a similar game as the Atoms couldn't overcome the Eagles' eight three pointers in the first quarter which was reflected in the final score. Outside of the first quarter, the Atoms played neck and neck with the Eagles but couldn't cut into the deficit at the final buzzer. The Atoms continue to be road tested as they travel to Mt. Vernon Tuesday evening.

Swim/Dive dove back into the pool in a big way Friday at GW Rec Center vs Mount Vernon. The Atoms dominated the night with several swimmers coming close to school records on the way to a double win. The Atoms looked to be hitting their stroke as they have their final meet Saturday, January 20 at Spring Hill Rec Center vs Falls Church. This will be a special night as the team celebrates their seniors one final time before the National District Championship Meet January 26 and 27.

Wrestling hosted a double dual meet Wednesday evening at Annandale. The Atoms faced off against Lewis in their first match. The Lancers showed why they are a favorite to the win the district championship with a convincing win over the Atoms. The Atoms took on Justice in the second match that saw the Wolves come out victorious. The Atoms saw an early deficit vs Wolves but three consecutives pins by the Atoms got them back in it. The Wolves eventually won a couple matches after to win the match. The Atoms travel to Freedom today and get back to the district on Wednesday at TJ.

Indoor Track got back on the track Friday evening at TJ Middle School. Growth and personal records were once again set at the meet by several boys and girls. The main highlight of the night though was the girls track team coming away with the overall meet victory! The Atoms have one more tune up on Saturday, January 27 before the National District Championship Meet in February.

Gymnastics returned to the mat Wednesday at Robinson. The Atoms showed of their new leotards in their first meet of the new year. The Atoms continued to show growth and improvement across the team with a few gymnasts scoring a  personal best in several events. The Atoms look to be even better the next time they hit the mat Wednesday at South County.

We are continuing that recognition as all of our Winter student-athletes have been provided a yard sign of their own!

Be on the lookout and when you see one make sure to show your support of the time and effort they are putting in to making the Annandale community proud!

Atoms Boosters Concession Stand Help

Special Ask... Atoms After School Snack Bar

As many of you know, the Atoms Athletic Boosters has been able to open our concessions stand after school for your children to grab a bite to eat prior to heading to their activities. If your schedule allows, please consider volunteering 1 day a week or even just 1-2 days a month. The hours are 3:15-4:15. This is a rare benefit in Fairfax County that we are able to provide for our kids, but we can’t do it without parent help. Please contact at odessapmurray@gmail.com or (703) 626-9647 if interested in helping.
