Fox Mill Focus

Friday January 12, 2024

Good afternoon, Fox Mill Families,

We hope you had a good week. We would like to thank all the parents who volunteered their time to support our students during Japanese Art week. Our students along with your help produced breath taking art pieces, which are currently on display throughout the building.

Here are a few updates.

AAP News

Students in Grades K-2 are continuing to work on their critical and creative thinking skills. In the last month they have learned the value of analogies in making connections at a more sophisticated level. "A facility for working with analogies gives students a structure for generating creative ideas, seeing complex relationships, and making unusual comparisons. Analogies are fun – how is thinking like a volcano? How is a dandelion like a good book? They stimulate the imagination and lead students to deeper understandings by connecting things that do not always appear connected."

This month, they are learning the skill of asking questions. "Students who take responsibility for asking their own questions become more productive and engaged in their learning processes. Guiding the development of thinking skills in all students empowers them, increases their independence, and helps them develop to their maximum potential. Children always have a wealth of questions – encourage questioning in your child and work with them to find answers."

This week, 43 of our 47 Young Scholars went to the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C. to participate in the museum’s City by Design Program. This experience offered both teachers and students an engaging environment. Students became city planners for the day as they designed their own model city. They considered the problems a city can have and offered solutions by planning their own community. They used their imaginations to design and construct model buildings for the city using colorful supplies and recycled materials. Look for pictures of our trip on the school's website. Fun was had by all!
