We hope that you have had an amazing week! As the winter season is upon us, we want to take a moment to remind our wonderful Bucknell community about some important information regarding winter weather.
Dressing for the Weather: Please ensure that your child is dressed appropriately for the colder temperatures. Encourage them to wear layers, a warm coat, gloves, and a hat to stay comfortable. Classes will continue to go outside for recess and other activities during the winter months.
Arrival and Dismissal: As a reminder, all families can go through Kiss and Ride, which opens at 8:40am every morning. Please make sure that you are not parking your car on University Drive. We have had more complaints about families parking on both sides of the road and getting out of their cars to walk students to Door 1. This is a safety hazard and there are “No Parking Signs” on this street.
Winter Health Tips: Please remind your child about the importance of handwashing and maintaining good hygiene to prevent the spread of winter illnesses.
Stay Connected: Please continue to read this week’s newsletter for ways that you can stay connected in the event that we have a school closing, delay, or early release because of weather.
Lastly, we can hardly believe that Quarter 2 is coming to an end soon! Please use this as an opportunity to check in with students about their progress. You might ask your students to tell you more about Bulldog Time, what they’re learning on their flex days, information about specials, or what they’re learning in literacy and math.

Volunteer with Give TogetherVolunteer with Give TogetherFCPS students continue to find incredible ways to serve their community while building Portrait of a Graduate skills such as becoming an ethical and global citizen. The school division is excited to collaborate with Volunteer Fairfax for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
Students and families can volunteer on Monday, January 15, at Volunteer Fairfax’s Give Together event. It is designed to engage families with children (ages 5-12) in service learning. Projects will include a food drive, assembling caring kits for community members who need support, making no-tie fleece blankets for veterans, environmental stewardship, and support for animal welfare.
Students ages 13 to 18 are welcome to serve as teen event volunteers. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Winter Weather
 As we progress into the new year, we are anticipating the possible impact of inclement weather may have on our school schedule. As a reminder, FCPS has several schedules established when inclement weather strikes. These schedules are: 1) keep schools closed all day; 2) open schools two hours late; and 3) close schools two hours early. TJ TECHSTRAVAGANZA 2024
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology is hosting their 20th Annual TECHSTRAVAGANZA. TJHSST Techstravaganza is a FREE hands-on STEM fair that attracts thousands of attendees from the DMV area every year. Over 300 TJ student and teacher volunteers engage students in STEM activities, which include lava lamps, banana DNA extraction, robotics, rocketry demonstrations, programming workshops, and other STEM exhibits. The event will take place in-person at Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology (see map) on Saturday, May 18, 2024 from 10 AM to 4 PM.
Registration is free. TJHSST is providing free transportation to make the event more accessible to students. More information about the even can be found at http://tjtechstrav.org./.

La Escuela Secundaria de Ciencia y Tecnología Thomas Jefferson organiza su vigésima edición anual de TECHSTRAVAGANZA. TJHSST Techstravaganza es una feria práctica GRATUITA de STEM que atrae a miles de asistentes del área del DMV cada año. Más de 300 estudiantes y maestros voluntarios de TJ involucran a los estudiantes en actividades STEM, que incluyen lámparas de lava, extracción de ADN de plátano, robótica, demostraciones de cohetes, talleres de programación y otras exhibiciones STEM. West Potomac Girls Basketball: Youth Night Game
 On behalf of the entire West Potomac Girls Basketball Staff and all our players, we would like to invite all Bucknell students, players, staff, and community to attend our "Youth Night" event on Friday, January 26th at West Potomac High School. All 3 levels (Freshman, JV, and Varsity) will compete against Woodson High School, with games being held at 4:30, 5:45, and 7:30. There will be lots of free giveaways, chances to win prizes, and an opportunity to meet the Varsity team after the final game of the night. This has been a great event for us in the past and we hope to have a big crowd in attendance again this year!

National Mentoring Month
 Imagine a world where young people feel empowered, encouraged, and understood. Mentors can make that world a reality by helping young people find and follow their passions, excel in school, and thrive wherever they are.Learn more about Mentoring Month.
Research has shown that young people with at least one trusted mentor are less likely to skip school, less likely to use illegal drugs or drink alcohol, and more prepared to enter college or the workforce. Yet one in three children lack a mentor.
All it takes is one person to serve as a trusted adult to help change a young person’s path in life. Mentors provide attention, support, and enrichment, and help connect their mentees to resources that may help them on their journey in life.
FCPS’ MentorWorks program matches mentors with students in schools near where they live or work. They meet for at least 30 minutes a week. Learn more about how to become a mentor for an FCPS student. Orthodox Epiphany
In the Orthodox church, Epiphany is celebrated on January 19 and commemorates the baptism of Jesus rather than the arrival of the Magi. It is believed that Christ's baptism by John the Forerunner (John the Baptist) in the River Jordan began Christ's ministry on earth and revealed the Holy Trinity of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit to mankind. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.
