Bailey’s Upper next Principal Search

We are beginning the search for a new principal for Bailey's Upper Elementary School.  A critical component of the process is to collect written input from staff, parents, and students. You are also invited to provide written input regarding our next principal's skills, experience, and leadership characteristics.

A virtual community meeting was held on Monday, January 8 to inform parents, staff, and community members about the principal selection process for the new principal at Bailey’s Upper Elementary. View the recording of the meeting - passcode: 76V419^#RQ . The meeting outlines the multiple levels of interviews that will take place to select a candidate who is the best fit and match to lead Bailey's Upper Elementary School.

If you are interested in serving as a panelist, please submit your information using this Google form. The FCPS Human Resources Department will contact those selected for the panel.

We invite you to email Michael Parker, FCPS Department of Human Resources Senior Administrative Employment Specialist, at mrparker@fcps.edu) with the skills, experiences, and leadership characteristics you feel are needed for Bailey’s Upper Elementary School. Your Input is confidential.

Welcome from Ms. Iyer-Interim Principal

Ms. Iyer

Hello Bailey’s, Upper Families,

It has been a wonderful few days here at Bailey’s. I’m excited to get to know students, staff, families, and all of the wonderful instructional programs going on here. Over the next several weeks, Region 2 will be working hard to interview & select your new principal. Please ensure that you provide your feedback and thoughts around what you would like to see in your new principal. This input is a critical piece in the principal selection process.

As Region 2 works through this, I will be here to support all of you in as many ways as I can. Ms. Lemmon and I have known each other for several years and I have the highest respect for her and her leadership. I know she will be missed and what a wonderful school she has led.

I look forward to working with you and learning from you. Please reach out to me with any questions, concerns, or clarifications. Go Tigers!

Respectfully,

Kanchana Iyer

School Safety Drills

At  Bailey’s Upper ES, our number one responsibility is to ensure the safety of our students and staff at all times. We continually work with county leaders to ensure coordinated responses to potential safety concerns and we practice emergency drills on a regular basis throughout the school year. We will hold fire drills, Lockdown Drills, Bus Evacuation and Tornado drills periodically throughout the year.

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We plan to have our second lockdown drill of the school year the week of January 15th at Bailey’s Upper ES.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child. Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

During a lockdown drill:

  1. All students stay in place with a teacher or staff member.

  2. Students and teachers remain in locked classrooms, unobservable from outside (lights-off, window blinds closed, door windows obscured with paper) and outside potential lines of fire.)

  3. Students and staff members disregard fire alarms.

  4. No one enters or exits the school, except public safety personnel.

  5. Persons in trailers remain in locked trailers.

Parent/Guardian class lunch visits returning this Month!

Parents are invited to join their student(s) for a special lunch at school on an assigned day! This is a great opportunity for parents to come in for lunch with their child. Please see the full schedule to view when your child’s class is scheduled for a lunch visit.

We encourage parents to eat the same lunch as their child either packed or purchased. On the day of your child’s lunch, please arrive 5-10 minutes early so you can sign-in at the office. All lunches will be hosted in room 249. If you choose to buy lunch from the cafeteria, adult pricing is $4.75 and may be paid in cash. Click here for more information on purchasing lunch

Current and upcoming Assessments at Bailey’s Upper

The winter Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) for Reading and Math was administered over the last several weeks to all students. Make up testing will continue as needed until January 18th. This is a state required exam that is used to measure student growth and progress. There are no "passing" or "failing" marks and students are not expected to study. Results are used as a starting point to identify areas of strength and growth. Following are the dates for the grade level VGA’s for Reading and Math:

iReady testing will begin the week of January 8th for most students. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) adopted iReady assessments as an academic universal screener for all elementary school students in grades 1-6. The iReady assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test.

WIDA Testing will begin January 22nd. Federal legislation requires that all students identified as English learners (ELs) are assessed annually to monitor their progress and proficiency in English. In Virginia, all divisions use the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs for this purpose.

All ELs, including those who have opted out of EL services, participate annually in the ELP assessment until they reach English language proficiency criteria (ELP level 6). Alternate assessment formats are available for certain students with disabilities.

If you have any questions regarding upcoming assessments, please contact Denise Cash-Pinckney or Nicole Cassidy our School Testing Coordinators at 703-503-2700
