MLK Day

 

🗓️ Calendar Reminder: Martin Luther King Jr. Day Holiday

FCPS schools and offices will be closed on Monday, January 15, for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday. The holiday marks the birthday of King, who was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism in the Civil Rights Movement. The movement protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. Learn more about Martin Luther King Jr.

Volunteer with Give Together FCPS students continue to find incredible ways to serve their community while building Portrait of a Graduate skills such as becoming an ethical and global citizen. The school division is excited to collaborate with Volunteer Fairfax for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Students and families can volunteer on Monday, January 15, at Volunteer Fairfax’s Give Together event. It is designed to engage families with children ages 5-12 in service learning. 

Students ages 13-18 are welcome to serve as teen event volunteers. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

 

Orthodox Epiphany (Observance Day)

In the Orthodox church, Epiphany is celebrated on January 19 and commemorates the baptism of Jesus. 

The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days.

📆 End of 2nd Quarter

January 25th will mark the end the 2nd quarter and 1st Semester.  There will be a 2 hour early release on the 25th and Student Holiday on the 26th.  

SIS Parent and StudentVue will be temporarily unavailable during the 2nd Quarter on the following dates and times: From Thursday, January 25, 2024, at 4 PM until Monday, February 5, 2024, at 6 AM. This is due the end of the grading period on Thursday, January 25th. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this period.

Report cards will be available on Parent/Student Vue by the 2nd week in February.


STUDENT SERVICES INFORMATION


Academic Advising Schedule Dates and Information

  1. Our Academic Website is currently available.  You can find a great deal of information on this site.  How teachers provide class feedback, course selection sheets, how to add classes for next year to SIS StudentVue and much more.  This is a public site available to all.
  2. If you are interested in Leadership or Sports Leadership you must complete an application.  The application can be found at this link and will close by January 19th.
  3. January 16th will be New Spartan Orientation for our Rising 9th graders. 
  4. January 16-18 will be Academic Days of Emphasis.  This will be an opportunity for teachers to provide feedback for 24-25 course selection.
  5. January 22nd-We will have an advising lesson.  Students will revisit how to add classes for next year to their StudentVue.
  6. If you are thinking about taking a Dual Enrollment class you will have to complete this packet.
  7. To better serve you during Academic Advising we are asking that students share their student NOVA ID, aka Empl ID, so that we can ensure a smooth Dual Enrollment process. 

Students who have not yet created a Nova ID (Empl ID) and know that they will be signing up for a NOVA Dual Enrollment class for 2024-2025 School year please go to: this website to create the ID. Share the ID HERE once one is created.

  1. February 5-9-Academic Advising Rising Juniors
  2. February 12-16 Academic Advising Rising Seniors
  3. February 20-27 Academic Advising Rising Sophomores
  4. March 29th last day to make schedule change requests for 24-25 School Year.

Dance Campt

👯‍♀️ West Springfield HS Dance Camp

Learn a hip hop dance routine and perform with the West Springfield High School Dance Team at halftime at a WSHS Varsity Basketball game! Dancers will receive a Dance Team t-shirt for the performance.

Who: Girls and Boys Grades K-8

When:

January 17 and 18 (camp),  5:30-8:30 p.m. both days

January 18, 7:30 p.m. Basketball Halftime Performance

✈️ Learn About Opportunities For the Year Following Graduation at the Gap Year Fair

FCPS School Counseling Services and Go Overseas will co-host the annual FCPS Gap Year Fair on Tuesday, January 30, 6-8:30 p.m., at Marshall High School.

This event is for high school students and their families who are interested in learning about increasing opportunities for the year following high school graduation. Students should register at USA Gap Year Fairs.


News for the Community


USAG Fort Belvoir Youth Program

The USAG Fort Belvoir Youth Program caters to students grades 6-12 by offering a variety of affordable activities, trips, and programs to enrich the experiences and connections of our military-connected youth.  Programs range from leadership and workforce preparation opportunities to life skills and fitness programs.

Within the Fort Belvoir Youth Program, the Youth Center opens after school and provides access to a diverse range of facilities including a gym, game room, art room, and dance studio. The free Middle School Teen program offers a homework lab, computer lab, open recreation, and special interest activities.  For the high school students, the Youth Center offers a teen lounge as a place to watch movies, play games, or just hang out.  

To take advantage of the Youth Center and all it has to offer, attendees must register through CYS Parent Central Services.  For more information, visit the Fort Belvoir Youth Center.  To connect with FCPS resources, please email militaryfamilies@fcps.edu.
