Academic Advising and Course Selection for 2024-25

Academic Advising Season has begun! Starting January 2024, students will meet individually with their teachers and school counselor to discuss and choose their courses for the 2024-25 school year. It is so important that parents and students are informed of their academic options. Families are encouraged to talk with current teachers for their feedback for next school year. Our course catalog, course selection sheets and other information are available on the Student Services Academic Advising webpage. Just like last year, students will choose classes via their SIS Student accounts. After the students choose their courses via their accounts, they will meet with their counselor to confirm the selections. Parents can view the course selections via their SIS Parent account. If you do not have an active account, please contact our Registrar or a Family Liaison in Student Services to obtain a login.

It is important for students to choose a course load that will challenge them and help prepare them for their post-secondary endeavors while also allowing for balance with their extracurricular and personal commitments. We take academic advising and course selection seriously and encourage students to seek input from current teachers, school counselor, and their parents/guardians as they make course selections. It is important that your student base their choices on their strengths and interests and with their plans for life after high school in mind.

During the first week in January we will hold events to help students in their  selection of appropriate courses for next school year. They are listed below.

  • January 16-23: Rising Senior and Junior ELLs Level 1 & 2 Individual Academic Advising & Course Selection (English 11 and ELD Level 3)

🗓️ Save the Date: Academy Open Houses Begin This Month!

Is your child interested in architecture and construction, information technology, or health science? FCPS high school academies will hold open houses for interested students beginning in mid-January.

A high school Academy is a center within a high school that offers advanced technical and specialized courses to prepare students for postsecondary education and/or career fields. Students enrolling in Academy elective courses will be provided with opportunities to participate in a variety of career experiences including shadowing, mentoring, or internships with local businesses.

Orthodox Epiphany

In the Orthodox church, Epiphany is celebrated on January 19 and commemorates the baptism of Jesus rather than the arrival of the Magi. It is believed that Christ's baptism by John the Forerunner (John the Baptist) in the River Jordan began Christ's ministry on earth and revealed the Holy Trinity of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit to mankind. The school calendar recognizes many religious and cultural observances (O days) during the school year. There is school on these days, however, the School Board has directed that tests, quizzes, field trips, graduation, homecoming, or FCPS-scheduled athletic events will not be held on these observance days. See the complete school year calendar.

Quarter End, Early Release, and Student Holiday

.

Thursday, January 25, is the last day of the quarter and a two-hour early release for students. Also, schools are closed for students on Friday, January 26, for a teacher work day. The schedule for the day is available hereSee the complete school year calendar.

From the Library

Are your students looking for volunteer hours? We welcome student volunteers—students can speak to anyone on the library team or email us at hhs_library@fcps.edu. The Herndon Fortnightly branch of FCPL also welcomes student volunteers through their Teen Advisory Board. Speaking of Herndon Fortnightly and FCPL, did you know there’s a Winter Reading Adventure happening now? Find all of the details at bit.ly/FCPL_WRA. The Herndon Fortnightly staff has also asked us to remind our community that there are many options for English conversation classes, both in-person and online. You can find details here or email Katherine.miller@fairfaxcounty.gov.

The Herndon HS library welcomes students before school, after school, and during the school day with a pass. Students looking for a lunch option other than the cafeteria can often get a pass to spend their lunch block in the library. Many classes incorporate research units throughout the year. We work with classes on developing research skills, and are available to meet individually with students. The library’s Schoology course has a variety of resources to help students find reliable information that they can use to create new learning. If we can answer any questions for you, please contact us at hhs_library@fcps.edu.

📝 Tutor.com Can Help With More Than Homework

Tutor.com offers more than help with homework! This on-demand tutoring service also provides a comprehensive range of resources including exam prep for AP, SAT, and ACT tests at no cost to families.

Students can take practice quizzes at any time. If they struggle in particular areas, they can immediately connect to a live tutor for help through voice or chat options. Learn more on the FCPS Tutor.com webpage.
