Specialist Spotlight - Advanced Academics

We are branching out in our critical and creative thinking lessons focus on Analogies.  This skill focuses on hearing a tale they’ve heard before.  Using analogies and analysis we compare and contrast the differences.  We then form opinions about how the stories relate to the real-world experience.  This skill can be used to help students understand how “humans” arrive at their own perspective even though we are the same species.   Analogies help deepen comprehension and empathy and gets the students to understand Points of View.  It can also be used in mathematics to produce multiple strategies that get to the same answer but compute various ways.

At Home Connection: Have students read and reread a fairy tale from different cultures.  Discuss the similarities and the noticeable differences.  Then research the particular culture the fairy tale came from (specifically the time period).   Ask your child:  What symbols in this version represent the time period and/or culture.  After completing this task snare a picture and share it with me at yfwilliams@fcps.edu .  I can’t wait to see your creations!

MLK Jr. Day - Day of Service

Our SCA students are working on a project for our BMP Day of Service happening on January 15th from 9:00 to 12:00.

Here is how you can help our community and our SCA Day of Service Project:

  • Starting next week (01/08 - 01/15) you can donate food items. We will have boxes in front of the office and students can bring to classrooms.
  • We are seeking individual serving items that are non-perishable, such as granola bars, mac n' cheese cups, ramen, etc.
  • If your student brings a donation, please put in the front office box.
  • Food items will be donated to our students' weekend snack packs and to other community organizations.
  • On January 15th (Day of Service) you are more than welcome to stop by BMP to donate food and/or volunteer. We will be making card for our elderly friends too.

Winter Weather & School Impact

When bad weather or other emergency situations occur, it may be necessary for FCPS to cancel, delay, or close schools early. Parents and students should have a well-communicated plan in place in the event of these emergency situations. Children need to know where to go or what to do if a parent will not be home.  In the case of emergency for a weather-related closing, delay, or early dismissal, the FCPS website will be updated first, and will automatically include an alert at the top of each page with the appropriate information. This information will remain posted until normal operations have resumed.
