The Cardinal Connection: CPES News Delivered to You

Dear Cardinal Families,

Join us for Family STEAM Night this evening from 6:00-7:30 pm. If you can't make it tonight, did you know it is Family Math Week? Forget stuffy textbooks and drills – FCPS Math Week is here to ignite a love of numbers through play and exploration! Join the fun from January 22nd to 28th with a treasure trove of activities. Turn grocery shopping into a scavenger hunt for shapes and fractions. Bake cookies and count scoops, double ingredients, and divide treats – all while practicing basic operations. Play board games that sharpen strategic thinking, or build a Lego city, estimating measurements and calculating angles. The possibilities are endless! FCPS Math Week offers resources and inspiration for every age, from counting rhymes with toddlers to coding robots with teens. So, gather your family, embrace the joy of discovery, and watch those "I hate math" frowns turn into triumphant grins!

Visit the Math Week website  and let the fun begin!

Warmly,

Allison Hoak, Principal

Jon Kemmerer, Assistant Principal

POG

Thank you to Jeff Lonnett, Education Specialist in the Advanced Academic office, for joining our PTA meeting last night to share more about POG. For the next few weeks, we will be sharing resources on how you can use POG with your child at home.

Better questions get better answers! When you are talking to your kids at home, consider these ideas so that students will talk, share, and discuss important skills.

How I'm using skills:

  • “Who in your class did you work with today? What did you work on?”
  • “What new ideas did you create today?”
  • “How or what did you share today? With your teacher? With friends?”
  • “What are you doing in school that you are excited about? What do you like about it?”
  • “What is the hardest thing you did today?  What made it hard? What are you doing to make it seem easier?”
  • “What are you proud of that you are doing? Why?”
  • “Who is someone that you enjoy working with? (Teacher or student) What makes them enjoyable?”

How I'm growing:

  • “What are you getting better at?  How do you know?”
  • “What do you do best?  Why is it important?”

Why the skills are important:

Have a Conversation! Consider sharing stories about how YOU work with others, share ideas, and solve problems at work, home, and in the community. This will help students see how these skills are important in your life, too, and help them see connections between school skills and adult skills! “Today I . . . “ or “At my job, I . . .”

Conversation to Raise Awareness of Fentanyl & Other Drugs

In this video, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid interviews the Fosters, a family who tragically lost their son Cayden to a half pill of fentanyl mistaken for Percocet. This heart-wrenching yet eye-opening video of their experience is essential to raise awareness among parents/caregivers and students about the dangers of fake painkillers.

Please join Dr. Reid this evening, Wednesday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m., at Edison High School for a community conversation about opioid awareness. You may register to attend. However, registration is not required; it is simply for space considerations.

The evening’s program is appropriate for parents/caregivers and students in grades 6-12. All attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

FCPS’ website also has resources to help you to start the conversation and additional support for families struggling with substance misuse.

⛄ No Virtual Learning on Snow Days This Winter

FCPS will be returning to its previous procedure for snow days for the 2023-24 school year. There will be no virtual learning when school is closed due to bad weather.

During snow days, students may still accessTutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available online and on public access television channels):

Eleven snow days are built into FCPS’ existing calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will enable us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services.
