Message from Ms. Kearns
Hello Bruin Families -
As we look toward the end of the 2nd quarter, we have scheduled extended WIN time so that our students can have extra time with their teachers. The dates are January 18 and 24 and students will need to request the time by submitting an ehall pass.
Next Monday is a holiday to celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. We hope you have a wonderful weekend.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day Holiday

Volunteer with Give Together
FCPS students continue to find incredible ways to serve their community while building Portrait of a Graduate skills such as becoming an ethical and global citizen. The school division is excited to collaborate with Volunteer Fairfax for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
Students and families can volunteer on Monday, January 15, at Volunteer Fairfax’s Give Together event. It is designed to engage families with children (ages 5-12) in service learning. Projects will include a food drive, assembling caring kits for community members who need support, making no-tie fleece blankets for veterans, environmental stewardship, and support for animal welfare.
Students ages 13 to 18 are welcome to serve as teen event volunteers. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Introducing Lightspeed
Our school will be using a new classroom management tool that will help teachers better connect with student devices during classes. The new tool will provide teachers with a number of helpful features:
- Easily view student screens in real time from the teacher console to see which students may need guidance or support.
- Focus student attention on a particular website on their device to minimize distractions.
- Pause student access to the internet to focus on other classroom tasks.
We believe this classroom management tool will allow us to maximize class time to support your student’s learning while at school.

English 11 Work Keys
Students in English 11/English 11 Honors will be taking the Writing work keys in their English class on January 30 (for odd period English classes) and January 31 (for even period English classes). This is a mandatory state assessment and is important that all students be present for this assessment as passing earns them their writing verified credit for graduation. Make ups will not occur until February 22. If you have a conflict, STUDENTS should speak to their English teacher directly.
As a reminder, students MUST take all standardized assessments on a school issued laptop; personal devices CANNOT be used, and the school will not be loaning out devices to students who forget their issued Chromebooks.
FAFSA/VASA Completion Event
A FAFSA/VASA Night will be held at Lake Braddock Secondary School on Tuesday, January 16, 2024. This event will take place in the Lecture Hall starting at 6:00 pm. The best place to park will be outside of Door 1. We will have staff there to direct you into the room where we will have helpers! Please complete this form so we have a headcount of how many families to expect.

Save the Date: Academy Open Houses Begin This Month!
Is your child interested in architecture and construction, information technology, or health science? FCPS high school academies will hold open houses for interested students beginning in mid-January.
A high school Academy is a center within a high school that offers advanced technical and specialized courses to prepare students for postsecondary education and/or career fields. Students enrolling in Academy elective courses will be provided with opportunities to participate in a variety of career experiences including shadowing, mentoring, or internships with local businesses.

Soft Launch of a New Financial Aid Form
Colleges and career schools use the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form to determine how much financial aid each student is eligible to receive. This aid could include grants, scholarships, work-study funds, and loans.
Any college-bound student — regardless of income — who wants to be considered for federal, state, and school financial aid programs should complete a FAFSA form.
The form is currently available for short periods of time while it is being updated to provide a better experience. Learn more about the 2024–25 FAFSA form.

Senior Fees
We are in the process of planning a meaningful graduation experience for the class of 2024. As we plan our various events, our top priority will be to keep our students, staff, and community safe. Understanding our plans may have to be adjusted along the way to adhere to FCPS guidelines, we are committed to making these events memorable and special. During our planning process, we also reviewed our budget and assessed our senior fees.
Senior fees typically cover all school-based costs for the students related to their graduation, such as: diplomas, flowers, caps, gowns, printing, and transportation. Senior fees do not include the costs incurred by individual students, such as: yearbooks, graduation announcements, All Night Graduation Party tickets, graduation photos, or a graduation DVD.
The Senior Fees for the Class of 2024 is $75.00. We encourage you to pay early. The deadline for senior fees is Friday, May 31 to be able to process all obligations and receive your cap and gown after graduation practice. The preferred method of payment for Senior Fees is MySchoolBucks (MSB). Beginning Monday, January 2, 2024, the Senior Fee product will be available in the MSB School Store. The instructions for online payments can be found on the Lake Braddock Secondary School website. If you would rather pay with cash or check, these payments can be dropped off in any of the high school sub schools. If paying with a check, please make your check payable to LBSS, memo “senior fee”. Checks can also be mailed to Lake Braddock, Attn: Finance Office. All seniors, even those who will not graduate until Summer School 2024, must pay the senior fees. No personal checks will be accepted after May 5, 2024. If there are concerns about being able to pay the fee and your student is on a free or reduced waiver, please come see Scott Darwin in Subschool 6.
Seniors must also meet all previously accumulated debts to the school. Caps and Gowns will not be given to any students until all obligations have been met and senior fees have been paid. Please start looking at MSB and clearing those obligations now.

The Lake Braddock Secondary School Parent Teacher Student Association (LBSS PTSA) is excited to host an online auction in March 2024 and we hope you will consider participating in our major fundraiser of the year! We are currently looking for donations of products, services, gift cards, and experiences to be auctioned and would appreciate your support. Spending a day shadowing you would be a priceless, amazing, and insightful experience!!
Virtual auction proceeds will be used for scholarships, educational grants, events, programs, teacher and student recognition, family engagement, and general school support. As a thank you for your tax-deductible donation (LBSS PTSA’s Tax ID Number: 52- 1289445), we will promote your generosity on our website, social media platforms, and our Newsletter.
With over 4,300 students, the largest secondary school in the Commonwealth of Virginia, we have a highly engaged group of families, faculty, staff, and the surrounding community with whom we regularly communicate. Our LBSS community actively supports local businesses and entities contributing to our school and students.

Safe Students, Safe Schools
Fairfax County Public Schools believes that academic success is built on the foundation of a safe learning environment. This includes physical safety, and mental health and wellness.
FCPS has a comprehensive approach to safety that involves physical security measures, online monitoring by security staff, and crisis intervention support. The division has created the Safe Students, Safe Schools Brochure (PDF) to enhance your awareness of potential hazards and to equip you with practical tips for how you can help. Visit the FCPS website for more information.
Snow Days This Winter
For the current school year, FCPS will be returning to its previous procedure for snow days — there will be no virtual learning days when school is closed due to bad weather.
During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):
Eleven snow days are built into the existing FCPS calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will allow us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services.
Special Education Resources for Families
Fairfax County Public Schools has the following resources available to assist families of students with special needs:
- The Office of Special Education Procedural Support helps staff, families, and students with the implementation of and compliance with the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, as amended.
- Kathy Murphy, the assistant ombuds for special education, provides information and support to caregivers and students regarding special education and Section 504 services. Contact the Ombuds Office by submitting a question, calling 571-423-4014, or emailing ombuds@fcps.edu.
Additionally, the Virginia Department of Education has updated the Virginia Family's Guide to Special Education. This state guide was developed to help those involved in special education including families, teachers, school administrators, advocates, and students.
The Suicide and Crisis Lifeline Saves Lives
Information was recently posted to the Healthy Minds Blog on the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline and other resources for suicide prevention.
The Healthy Minds Blog shares information related to youth mental health and wellness. Articles include tips and strategies for increasing wellness and resiliency, as well as fostering success at home, at school, and in the community.
The Healthy Minds Blog is a collaborative project between Fairfax County Public Schools and the Prevention Unit of the Fairfax County Department of Neighborhood and Community Services. Subscribe to Healthy Minds and receive a quarterly digest of articles.
