Roadrunner Rundown

Principal Message

Dear Families,

We have enjoyed having your students back in the building; sharing ideas and stories as we got back into routines with our return from Winter Break.  While the year is new, it is hard to believe that the 2nd quarter ends on January 25 which means we will have completed half of the 2023-2024 school year!  This is a great time of year to reflect on our successes and ways we want to grow in the second half of the year.  Our MRES staff often has conversations about this with one another and with students as we reflect on growing as communicators and being goal-directed and resilient.

Today on our Morning News Show we discussed this week’s Positivity Project word which  is prudence.  Prudence is being focused on future goals by making daily choices.  Please consider brainstorming with your children about their goals for the rest of the school year and what they can do today to get closer to this goal.

There are several student holidays coming up in January.

  • January 15 - Martin Luther King Jr Day - no school
  • January 25 - 2 Hour Early Release
  • January 26 - Teacher Workday - no school for students

Have a great week!

Much peace.

Matthew Chapman, Sue Kirby and Antoinette Nauflett

Support Food4Thought During Marshall Road’s MLK Jr. Week of Service

Marshall Road is participating in a Martin Luther King Jr.  Week of Service.  We are encouraging families to help provide meaningful change in our community by performing individual acts of kindness through service to others.

As part of this week of service, we are asking students and families to bring in an item for the Marshall Road Food4Thought program.  Each week, volunteers pack over 80 weekend food packs, which help support children experiencing food insecurity with healthy food for the weekend.  If you can help students in our MRES community with a donation, we would be most grateful.  Items can be placed in the F4T bin in the lobby during the week of January 16-19.  You can also donate food via the MRES Food4Thought Walmart Wishlist or the MRES Food4Thought Amazon Wishlist, and have items shipped directly to the school. Flyer

The following items are used in the bags; individual-sized items are most helpful:

  • Individual sized Chef Boyardee Cups
  • Individual Shelf Stable Milk Boxes
  • Oatmeal packets
  • Fruit cups
  • Mac and Cheese (cups or boxes)
  • Individual Juice boxes
  • Chicken (pouches, box or cans)
  • Soup (10oz can)
  • Applesauce (pouches)
  • Single Serve Cereal (box or cups)
  • Ramen Noodles
  • Granola bars
  • Salty snacks (individual packs of crackers, pretzels, or Goldfish)
  • Gently used plastic grocery bags

Additional Opportunities to Volunteer During Marshall Road’s MLK Jr. Week of Service

Join Volunteer Fairfax for their annual family-friendly volunteer event: Give Together.  This event takes place on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day (January 15), the only National Holiday dedicated to volunteer service and designated as a "day-on, not a day-off."   This event is intended for families who want to serve together and learn about ways to support some of the area’s local nonprofit partners working across a variety of mission areas.

Families with children as young as 5 years old are invited to participate in thoughtful, engaging projects that include a food drive and food packing, caring kits for community members who need support, no-tie fleece blankets for Veterans, environmental awareness and support for animal welfare.  Children earn passport stamps as they complete projects and are encouraged to participate in a reflection on Martin Luther King, Jr.'s legacy of service and community building.  Please note that this event is free to attend and open to the public but REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED.  Register here.

Learn about other volunteer opportunities in our area on Engage, a digital volunteer network, or EventBrite, or consult this list of “The Best Places to Volunteer with Your Kids in DC.”  Your family can also help the community in simple ways such as shoveling an elderly neighbor’s walkway, clearing leaves, or helping with other yard maintenance.  Whether it’s a small or big act of kindness, you can make a difference in our community!

Science Share & STEAM Night

The PTA is excited to partner with the school to host a Science Share & STEAM Night on Thursday, February 8, 5:30-7:00 pm.  Roadrunners will have an opportunity to share their own individual experiments.  Families are invited to come and see the projects our student scientists prepared and there will also be an opportunity for students to participate in hands-on STEAM activities, including fun with conductive dough and LEDs, playing with UV/light sensitive beads, and exploring the size and makeup of the universe!

We are seeking volunteers to assist students with hands-on STEAM activities at the event.  Please consider signing up here to help make this event a success.  You do not need to have a STEAM background to support this event, and middle and high school volunteers are welcome!

Please look for additional information about the Science Share soon.  If you have questions, please contact PTA STEAM Night Lead Michelle Weinberger at Weinberger.Michelle@gmail.com
