Lane Spelling Bee Registration Forms Due Next Friday, January 12th! |
If your child is interested in participating in this year’s Lane Spelling Bee, which will be held on Thursday, February 15th, after school, please remember to submit the registration/permission form sent home must be fully completed and submitted by next Friday, January 12th at 4 p.m. Late forms will not be accepted.
You can find more information about optional practice sessions and required grade-level bees in the Spelling Bee packet sent home before Winter Break and the slide deck from last night’s information meeting.
Dual Language Immersion Program Registration
Registration for the countywide lottery for Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs will open on Monday, January 22nd. Current pre-K students may apply for the kindergarten immersion program, and current kindergarten students may apply for the first grade immersion programs for the 2024-25 school year. Programs are available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.
Parents/caregivers who are interested may want to attend an informational meeting. Meetings are held at the school site. Check the FCPS events calendar for updated information. Meetings will begin on Tuesday, January 16th.
One virtual meeting hosted by the World Languages Office will include general program information. Access to this virtual meeting will be made available on the FCPS events calendar and the Dual Language Immersion registration site on the day of the meeting.

Attention Parents/Guardians of 6th Graders: Curriculum Nights Coming Next Week!
Course selection for the upcoming school year will start soon for middle schoolers and high schoolers. Next week, both middle schools that will welcome our 6th graders next year are offering events for parents.
If your 6th grader will be attending Twain Middle School next year, make plans to attend that school’s Transition Information Night on Monday, January 8th (snow date is Thursday, January 11th). An overview of 7th grade will be presented at 6 p.m. It will be followed by a presentation on the AVID program for prospective AVID parents/guardians at 7 p.m.
Representatives from all major academic departments, including ESOL and various electives, will be present.
Please note that due to limited space, this event is for parents/guardians only.
Hayfield Secondary School will host its Curriculum Night on Thursday, January 11th (snow date January 17th). An opening presentation covering academic advising and tips for selecting courses will be held at 6 p.m. in the auditorium. A Curriculum Fair will follow at 6:30 where teachers and staff will be available to help attendees explore different course offerings.
Virtual Math Week: Help FCPS Reach 1 Million Minutes of Math
FCPS Family Math Week starts on Monday, January 8th! Participate in games and stories online. FCPS is working toward a total of 1 million minutes logged by families. The event is free, with activities from ST Math geared toward students in grades K-6 and their families.
Math Week offers families an opportunity to experience math, literacy, history, and geography in a fun and positive way. All content will be available for families in English and Spanish beginning Monday, January 8th. Visit the Math Week website.

Conversation to Raise Awareness of Fentanyl and Other Drugs
Please join Dr. Reid on Wednesday, January 10th, at 6:30 p.m., at Edison High School for a community conversation about opioid awareness. You may register to attend. However, registration is not required; it is simply for space considerations.
The evening’s program is appropriate for parents/caregivers and students in grades 6-12. All attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.
FCPS’ website also has resources to help you to start the conversation and additional support for families struggling with substance misuse.

Transitioning into middle and high school can be challenging for many children and their families, especially for twice-exceptional students.
Join Dr. Nonye Oladimeji, FCPS Educational Specialist for AAP twice exceptional (2e) children, as she shares ideas for families and schools on how to ease the transition for students.
Webinar highlights:
- Learn about the tools and strategies to help your child navigate this period of change successfully.
- Learn about how to help your child establish and maintain a strong support system.
- Learn how to help your student balance the increased academic responsibility while trying to expand their horizons into clubs and extracurricular activities.

SIBSHOPS: An Exciting, In-person Workshop for Brothers and Sisters of Children with Special Needs!
The Sibshop workshops are for children in grades 2 through 6 enrolled in Fairfax County Public Schools who have siblings with special needs to:
- Meet other siblings in a relaxed setting.
- Celebrate the many contributions made by brothers and sisters of children with special needs.
- Share sibling experiences and receive peer support.
- Play games and have fun!
Presented by FCPS School Social Work Services

Community Events & Activities
Hayfield Little Hawks Cheer Clinic
Hayfield Athletic Boosters will host a cheer clinic with the Hayfield Cheerleaders next week. The two-day clinic will include instruction on cheers and chants, jumps, motions, dance, and spirit activities. It’s open to all children in kindergarten through 6th grade and will be held at Hayfield Secondary on Wednesday, January 10th and Thursday, January 11th from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. In addition, all clinic participants will receive a t-shirt and will cheer through halftime at the Hayfield vs. Mount Vernon Varsity Boys Basketball game on Friday, January 12th. The $75.00 fee includes both days of instruction, a performance on day three, a t-shirt, hair bow, snacks, and one free basketball game ticket.

Secondary Baseball Winter Youth Clinic
The start of Spring Training is still weeks away, but baseball is already going strong at Hayfield Secondary School. The school’s team will host a special Winter Youth Clinic on two Saturdays, February 3rd and 10th, for students in kindergarten through 6th grade. You can find more information, including fees, on the flyer below. Be sure to register by January 15th, as space is limited.
