We may have just returned from a long holiday break, but there are even more holiday schedule changes on the horizon. On Monday, January 15th, school and the office will be CLOSED in observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday Holiday.

You can learn more about Martin Luther King Jr here.

Volunteer with Give Together

FCPS students continue to find incredible ways to serve their community while building Portrait of a Graduate skills such as becoming an ethical and global citizen. The school division is excited to collaborate with Volunteer Fairfax for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.

Students and families can volunteer on Monday, January 15th, at Volunteer Fairfax’s Give Together event. It is designed to engage families with children (ages 5-12) in service learning.

Projects will include a food drive, assembling caring kits for community members who need support, making no-tie fleece blankets for veterans, environmental stewardship, and support for animal welfare.

Students ages 13 to 18 are welcome to serve as teen event volunteers. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

January Gets Jumping and Rolling, Tumbling and Twisting in P.E. Gymnastics Unit

Students in all grade levels will start bending, stretching, and rolling their way through a variety of different activities as P.E. classes begin their annual gymnastics unit, which will continue through the end of the month. Please be sure your child is dressed to move comfortably in all those different ways on their P.E. days. Be sure that this includes sneakers, which should always be worn on all P.E. days.

VGA Winter Testing Continues Next Week

Students in grades 3 through 6 take Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) standardized tests in reading and mathematics in the fall and the winter each year. Students completed reading tests this week. Next week, they will take math tests. Here is the schedule for remaining testing days:

  • Tuesday, January 9th – 4th and 6th Grade Math
  • Wednesday, January 10th – 3rd and 5th Grade Math

Make-up tests will be available, but it’s best for children to take these tests with the rest of their classmates. Please avoid scheduling appointments on these days and make sure your child arrives at school on time. Also, please ensure that your child gets a good night’s sleep the night before a test and eats a healthy breakfast that morning.

More information is available on the VGA webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/43932). If you have questions about any state assessments, please contact your child’s teacher or the school test coordinators, Assistant Principals Julie Kubiak and Allen Dickens.
