Atoms Weekly Recap

A recap from the week in winter sports:

Girls Basketball traveled to Justice for their first game of the new year. Freshman continue to improve with each game but saw their efforts fall shorts vs the Wolves. JV got their second consecutive win (defeated Fairfax prior to the break). Varsity made it a back and forth game with the Wolves throughout the first half with the Wolves taking the lead into halftime. The second half saw the Wolves pull away late in the third and start of the fourth to get the win over the Atoms. The Atoms traveled to Lewis for game two. The played well despite a couple injuries to key players and were able to pull off the win vs the Lancers. Freshman and JV came away with wins as well to make it a clean sweep of the night. The Atoms host TJ in their next contest Tuesday evening

Boys Basketball played two more district games to start the new year off. The first game welcomed Justice to Annandale on Wednesday evening. The freshman battled throughout but fell short in their comeback attempt. The JV team had an exciting nail biter down to the buzzer with the Atoms prevailing 53-51. Varsity came out on fire taking a 27-5 lead at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw a lot of the same and the Atoms took a comfortable lead 43-11 to halftime. The second half was cruise control with the Atoms winning comfortably in the front of the home crowd. The Atoms hosted senior night Friday vs Lewis and recognized five seniors. The Atoms were cold to start the game but caught fire late in the first quarter and into the second as they took an 11 point halftime lead. Lewis cut it close but the Atoms were too prevailing on senior night 56-39. Freshman fell in their game but JV ran away comfortably to get the win. The Atoms travel to TJ Tuesday evening.

Swim/Dive jumped back into the pool Friday evening vs Edison. Several Atoms swimmers won their respective event but it wasn't enough to get the win over the Eagles. Several Atoms continue to improve on their personal best and a few boys relays teams continue to inch closer to a school record time as they prepare for the National District Championship Meet in a few weeks. The Atoms dive back in  the pool Friday evening at GW Rec Center vs Mt. Vernon.

Wrestling competed in tri meet Wednesday evening at Falls Church. The Atoms came away with a win in their first match vs Falls Church with several wrestlers getting victories with the pin. The second match saw the potential National District Champion Edison run away with the victory over the Atoms. JV Wrestling saw action Thursday evening at TJ. The night showed the continuous improvement and determination of the younger wrestlers in the program. The Atoms hit the mat Wednesday evening with a home tri-meet at 6:00pm.

Indoor Track picks back up with their next meet on January 12.

Gymnastics returns to the floor on January 10 at Robinson.

Atoms Yard Signs

As we continue through the 2023-2024 school year, we aim to bring the community of Annandale closer together. In the Fall every student-athlete was given an Atoms yard sign to be displayed for the community to see. We are continuing that recognition as all of our Winter student-athletes have been provided a yard sign of their own!

Be on the lookout and when you see one make sure to show your support of the time and effort they are putting in to making the Annandale community proud!

Atoms Boosters Concession Stand Help

Special Ask... Atoms After School Snack Bar

As many of you know, the Atoms Athletic Boosters has been able to open our concessions stand after school for your children to grab a bite to eat prior to heading to their activities. If your schedule allows, please consider volunteering 1 day a week or even just 1-2 days a month. The hours are 3:15-4:15. This is a rare benefit in Fairfax County that we are able to provide for our kids, but we can’t do it without parent help. Please contact at odessapmurray@gmail.com or (703) 626-9647 if interested in helping.
