Thank you to our Little Run PTA and Families for Friday's Warm Welcome Back

Thank you to our Little Run PTA and families for providing our teachers and staff with a warm welcome back on Friday. The treats were delicious, and a perfect way to conclude a wonderful week.

A Message from the Little Run Admin Team

New Year

Dear Little Run Families,

Happy New Year, Roadrunners! As we kick off 2024, we are thrilled to declare the first week back a resounding success! Our hallways have been buzzing with the renewed energy of learning, laughter, and the promise of exciting possibilities. Witnessing the joy of returning to familiar faces and forging new connections is heartwarming.

This week saw numerous accomplishments, wonderful celebrations, and delightful surprises. Many of our students, with focused determination, tackled the VGA assessments, demonstrating their commitment to academic growth. We also revisited the "The Little Run Way," a vibrant and engaging framework outlining our school's behavior expectations. It's a wonderful guide for navigating the exciting learning and social interaction journey, paving the way for mutual respect and understanding.

We are delighted that our 6th-grade team is officially complete as Ms. Sarah Gentry joins Mr. Russell Arrington. We are grateful to have two passionate educators ready to work with our students and alongside the best staff in FCPS. Please welcome our newest members of the Little Run Family when you see them!

And we can't forget the incredible gesture from our phenomenal PTA and families! The delicious welcome-back treats on Friday were a sweet note of appreciation that brightened everyone's day. Moments like these truly solidify the sense of community that makes our school so special.

As we embark on this new year, we are energized by the sheer potential ahead. Let's use this momentum to cultivate a year of curiosity, collaboration, and celebration. We are so happy to have our hallways and classrooms full again.

Thank you for your continued partnership, and please do not hesitate to contact us.

Sincerely,

Christie Yarn, Principal

Lesley Hassen, Assistant Principal

The Little Run Way

The Little Run Way

Are you looking for a topic to engage in at the dinner table this weekend? Or on the drive to your next destination? Ask your child about The Little Run Way!

Ms. Yarn, Ms. Hassen, and Ms. Brown spoke to students this week on the LRES Morning News Show about what it looks like to be respectful, responsible, and ready in the cafeteria, classrooms, hallways, and recess. Posters are displayed around the school to serve as a visual reminder to our Roadrunners of our Little Run expectations.

We look forward to continuing our conversations about The Little Run Way next week as we focus on additional areas of the building, such as the bathrooms, specials, and the bus.

The Positivity Project at Little Run

Positivity Project Logo

This week our school community will be focusing on the character strength of Prudence. Prudence means you plan for the future and achieve your goals by making careful everyday choices.

Prudence is the ability to do the right thing for the right reason, at the right time. It’s a future-oriented way of thinking that helps a person set goals, make plans, and have the discipline to accomplish them. It is cognitive -- more a strength of the head than of the heart.

Prudence supports effective individual self-management. Whether aspiring for an athletic record, academic grade, or purchasing a car, foresight and planning are necessary. However, even with a plan, long-term goals can only be obtained by overcoming those impulses and desires that steer you away from your goals. Prudence provides the wisdom to know which character strength to leverage, at which time, to achieve your desired end state.

To practice and encourage the character strength of prudence with your child, please visit the Positivity Project’s P2 for Families (password: P2) where together you will watch a video, read a quote and talk about the answers to three questions.

Have a wonderful week!

Conversation to Raise Awareness of Fentanyl and Other Drugs

Screenshot from Opioid Video

In this video, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid interviews the Fosters, a family who tragically lost their son Cayden to a half pill of fentanyl mistaken for Percocet. This heart-wrenching yet eye-opening video of their experience is essential to raise awareness among parents/caregivers and students about the dangers of fake painkillers.

Please join Dr. Reid on Wednesday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m., at Edison High School for a community conversation about opioid awareness. You may register to attend. However, registration is not required; it is simply for space considerations.

The evening’s program is appropriate for parents/caregivers and students in grades 6-12. All attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

FCPS’ website also has resources to help you to start the conversation and additional support for families struggling with substance misuse.

Safe Students, Safe Schools

Fairfax County Public Schools believes that academic success is built on the foundation of a safe learning environment. This includes physical safety, and mental health and wellness.

FCPS has a comprehensive approach to safety that involves physical security measures, online monitoring by security staff, and crisis intervention support. The division has created the Safe Students, Safe Schools Brochure (PDF) to enhance your awareness of potential hazards and to equip you with practical tips for how you can help. Visit the FCPS website for more information.

🔢 Help FCPS Reach 1 Million Minutes of Math

FCPS Family Math Week starts on Monday, January 8! Participate in games and stories online. FCPS is working toward a total of 1 million minutes logged by families. The event is free, with activities from ST Math geared toward students in grades K-6 and their families.

Math Week offers families an opportunity to experience math, literacy, history, and geography in a fun and positive way. All content will be available for families in English and Spanish beginning Monday, January 8. Visit the Math Week website.
