Happy New Year! I hope your family is refreshed, recharged, and ready for an amazing 2024. As we kick off the new year and look forward to the end of the quarter two, I wanted to take a moment to share some thoughts on keeping your children motivated during this time. Let me say out loud that we've got an incredible bunch of students at Riverside and I'm confident that the final two quarters are going to be filled with even more achievements, growth, and laughter. But, let's face it – getting back into the swing of things after the holiday break can be a bit of a challenge.
So, here are a few tips and tricks to keep the motivation flowing:
- Goal Setting - Set a family goal or goals for the upcoming semester. Whether it's attending a Riverside event together, reading a book each week, or dinner together with no TV twice a week, having something to strive for can make a world of difference.
- Celebrate Small Wins - Let's celebrate every victory, no matter how small! Completing homework, participating in class, or mastering a new skill – these are all reasons to break out the confetti. Positive reinforcement works wonders!
- Mix Fun with Learning - Learning doesn't have to be all books and worksheets. It can be cooking, playing board games, and playing a sport. Encourage your kids to explore topics they're passionate about, whether it's through a book, a documentary, or a fun experiment. The more they enjoy the learning process, the more motivated they'll be.
Remember, we're all in this together. If you ever feel like you need some extra support or have ideas to share, our school community is here for you. Let's make 2024 a year filled with growth, positivity, and countless achievements! Here's to a fantastic year ahead!

Riverside Elementary School is pleased to announce the return of after-school clubs!!! We will be offering an amazing selection of clubs starting this month! Please complete this form and return to your teacher by Monday, January 8th if you would like to participate in any of the activities.
After-school activities will begin the week of January 22nd - January 26th and will meet weekly through the week of April 15th - April 19th. Clubs will meet from 4:15 PM to 5:15 PM.
Since some activities may be very popular, we will assign students to clubs on a first-come, first-served basis, to fairly select participants if size limits are exceeded. For this reason, we will be enforcing the permission slip deadline of January 8th and will not accept late forms. This is a quick turnaround. Please encourage students to return their permission forms as soon as possible if they would like to participate. There is a $10.00 fee to cover the cost of materials and a T-shirt (no child will be excluded due to inability to pay). Additional donations will be gladly accepted. Payment will be accepted in cash or by check payable to Riverside Elementary. A link to register will also be shared via Talking Points on Friday, January 5, 2024.

Math Week
FCPS Family Math Week starts on Monday, January 8! Participate in games and stories online. FCPS is working toward a total of 1 million minutes logged by families. The event is free, with activities from ST Math geared toward students in grades K-6 and their families.
Math Week offers families an opportunity to experience math, literacy, history, and geography in a fun and positive way. All content will be available for families in English and Spanish beginning Monday, January 8. Visit the Math Week website.

🗺️ Dual Language Immersion Program Registration
Registration for the countywide lottery for Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs will open on Monday, January 22. Current pre-K students may apply for the kindergarten immersion program, and current kindergarten students may apply for the first grade immersion programs for the 2024-25 school year. Programs are available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.
Parents/caregivers who are interested may want to attend an informational meeting. Meetings are held at the school site. Check the FCPS events calendar for the most current information. Meetings will begin on Tuesday, January 16.
A virtual meeting hosted by the World Languages Office will include general program information. Access to this virtual meeting will be made available on the FCPS events calendar and the Dual Language Immersion registration site on the day of the meeting.

Safe Students, Safe Schools
Fairfax County Public Schools believes that academic success is built on the foundation of a safe learning environment. This includes physical safety, and mental health and wellness.
FCPS has a comprehensive approach to safety that involves physical security measures, online monitoring by security staff, and crisis intervention support. The division has created the Safe Students, Safe Schools Brochure (PDF) to enhance your awareness of potential hazards and to equip you with practical tips for how you can help. Conversation to Raise Awareness of Fentanyl and Other Drugs
In this video, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid interviews the Fosters, a family who tragically lost their son Cayden to a half pill of fentanyl mistaken for Percocet. This heart-wrenching yet eye-opening video of their experience is essential to raise awareness among parents/caregivers and students about the dangers of fake painkillers.
Please join Dr. Reid on Wednesday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m., at Edison High School for a community conversation about opioid awareness. You may register to attend. However, registration is not required; it is simply for space considerations.
The evening’s program is appropriate for parents/caregivers and students in grades 6-12. All attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.
FCPS’ website also has resources to help you to start the conversation and additional support for families struggling with substance misuse.

¡Feliz año nuevo! Espero que su familia esté renovada, recargada y lista para un increíble 2024. Mientras comenzamos el nuevo año y esperamos con ansias el final del segundo trimestre, quería tomarme un momento para compartir algunas ideas sobre cómo mantener motivados a sus hijos durante esta vez. Permítanme decir en voz alta que tenemos un grupo increíble de estudiantes en Riverside y estoy seguro de que los dos últimos trimestres estarán llenos de aún más logros, crecimiento y risas. Pero seamos realistas: volver a la normalidad después de las vacaciones puede ser todo un desafío.
Entonces, aquí hay algunos consejos y trucos para mantener fluida la motivación:

Anime a sus hijos a explorar temas que les apasionen, ya sea a través de un libro, un documental o un experimento divertido. Cuanto más disfruten el proceso de aprendizaje, más motivados estarán.

La Escuela Primaria Riveride ofrecerá otra increíble selección de programas después de la escuela a partir de este mes! Complete este formulario y devuélvalo a su maestro antes del lunes 8 de enero si desea participar en cualquiera de las actividades.
Las actividades extraescolares comenzarán la semana del 22 al 26 de enero y se reunirán semanalmente durante la semana del 15 al 19 de abril. Los clubes se reunirán de 16:15 a 17:15.
Dado que algunas actividades pueden ser muy populares, asignaremos a los estudiantes a los clubes por orden de llegada, para seleccionar de manera justa a los participantes si se exceden los límites de tamaño. 🔢 Ayuda a FCPS a Alcanzar un Millón de Minutos de Matemáticas
¡La Semana Familiar de Matemáticas de FCPS comienza el lunes 8 de enero! Únase a nosotros en línea para juegos e historias. 🗺️ Inscripción para el Programa de Inmersión en Dos Idiomas
La inscripción para la lotería en todo el condado para los programas de Inmersión en Dos Idiomas (DLI) se abrirá el lunes 22 de enero.
