Bailey's Upper ES News You Choose

Parent/Guardian class lunch visits returning this Month!

Parents are invited to join their student(s) for a special lunch at school on an assigned day! This is a great opportunity for parents to come in for lunch with their child. The full schedule with all classes is coming soon. Please see below for the upcoming scheduled lunches.

We encourage parents to eat the same lunch as their child either packed or purchased. On the day of your child’s lunch, please arrive 5-10 minutes early so you can sign-in at the office. All lunches will be hosted in room 249. If you choose to buy lunch from the cafeteria, adult pricing is $4.75 and may be paid in cash. Click here for more information on purchasing lunch.

Current and upcoming Assessments at Bailey’s Upper

The winter Virginia Growth Assessment (VGA) for Reading and Math was administered over the last two weeks to all 4th and 5th graders, as well as 3rd grade Math. Third grade Reading and all grade level make-up tests will take place when we return to school in January. This is a state required exam that is used to measure student growth and progress. There are no "passing" or "failing" marks and students are not expected to study. Results are used as a starting point to identify areas of strength and growth. Following are the dates for the grade level VGA’s for Reading and Math:

  • Jan. 9th 3rd-5th Math Makeups
  • Jan. 10th 3rd and 5th Reading Makeups

iReady testing will begin the week of January 8th for most students. Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) adopted iReady assessments as an academic universal screener for all elementary school students in grades 1-6. The iReady assessment includes a reading test and a mathematics test.

WIDA Testing will begin January 22nd. Federal legislation requires that all students identified as English learners (ELs) are assessed annually to monitor their progress and proficiency in English. In Virginia, all divisions use the WIDA ACCESS for ELLs for this purpose.

All ELs, including those who have opted out of EL services, participate annually in the ELP assessment until they reach English language proficiency criteria (ELP level 6). Alternate assessment formats are available for certain students with disabilities.

If you have any questions regarding upcoming assessments, please contact Denise Cash-Pinckney or Nicole Cassidy our School Testing Coordinators at 703-503-2700
