Principal's Message

Greetings Tiger Families!

On Tuesday on morning as we welcomed students back to school on the Twain TV announcements, I shared with the students my own New Year’s resolutions and challenged them to think about, and identify, areas they would like to improve in the coming year. Similarly, at our faculty work session that afternoon, we engaged in a reflective activity where everyone identified a personal and professional resolution for their own improvement. I believe it is important that we model a reflective mindset and embrace the reality that we all have things we need, or want, to improve on. If we expect that of our students, we certainly need to do that ourselves. As you spend time with your Tigers this weekend, please ask them if they have identified any New Year’s resolutions for themselves – whether they be academic or personal.

We all returned from winter break energized and excited to see what 2024 brings for our Tigers. Like every year, I am sure there will be some challenges that produce growth and many accomplishments to celebrate. Go Tigers!

Sincerely,

Matt

Conversation to Raise Awareness of Fentanyl and Other Drugs

In this video, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid interviews the Fosters, a family who tragically lost their son Cayden to a half pill of fentanyl mistaken for Percocet. This heart-wrenching yet eye-opening video of their experience is essential to raise awareness among parents/caregivers and students about the dangers of fake painkillers.

Please join Dr. Reid on Wednesday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m., at Edison High School for a community conversation about opioid awareness. You may register to attend. However, registration is not required; it is simply for space considerations.

The evening’s program is appropriate for parents/caregivers and students in grades 6-12. All attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.

FCPS’ website also has resources to help you to start the conversation and additional support for families struggling with substance misuse.

PTA Updates

Spirit Night at Hangry Burger

Join us for our next Sprit Night at Hangry Burger, located at 6699 Frontier Dr. Suite G, Springfield on January 10th from 4-8 PM.  Hangry Burger will donate 15% of all walk-in to Twain PTA.  No phone or online orders during that time.  Come and eat food and support the PTA.

PTA Meeting and Parent Strategy Session

Join us on January 17th at 7:00 PM for our new and improved PTA Meetings.  Starting in January, we are combining our PTA Meetings with Parent Strategy Sessions.  We are pleased to welcome Doug Danosos, a financial advisor (and Twain parent!), to be our first presenter.  Doug will be sharing comprehensive strategies to assist parents as they prepare to pay for college.  Doug provided this well-received presentation to AVID parents earlier this year, and we wanted to make it available to the entire Twain Community.  Zoom link will be provided for those choosing to join virtually.

Staff Member of the Month

Congratulations to Ms. Nako, a Special Education Teacher, for being named the Staff Member of the Month for January.  Ms. Nako was awarded a gift card to a local restaurant, a reserved parking spot, and a trophy.  Thank you, Ms. Nako for making a difference at Twain.
