Campbell's Corner

Greetings Key Families,

It was wonderful welcoming our students back from winter break! Our staff loved reconnecting with the students and hearing about what they did over the break, how the celebrated the New Year, and what they were excited about upon returning to school. Next week, our students will participate in the midyear VGA assessment on Tuesday (Reading) and Thursday (Math). Please encourage your Key Patriot to make sure they get a good night’s sleep and eat a nutritious breakfast either at home or at school both mornings to set them up for success on these important state assessments! We are looking forward to another wonderful week at Key MS. Happy New Year!

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell

Teacher Shortage Letter

Dear Families,

I hope this message finds you well. We are aware of concerns within our school community about the ongoing teacher shortage and increased presence of teacher trainees and substitutes in our classrooms. Please know that we are addressing this situation and are committed to providing all of our students a safe, nurturing, and academically enriching environment.

The shortage of qualified educators is impacting school districts around the country. This USA Today article notes that 86% of public schools are having difficulty hiring educators. A state report on Virginia’s K-12 teacher pipeline found that teacher shortages increased from 3.9% to 4.8% in the current school year.

Below are some steps FCPS is taking to fill vacant teaching positions:

  • Addressing the Teacher Pipeline: FCPS has developed outreach programs and partnerships with local universities to encourage more individuals to consider a career in education. This is critical, given the decline in individuals pursuing careers in education.
  • Welcoming Teacher Trainees: Our teacher trainees undergo rigorous training and supervision by experienced teachers. This enables them to provide a supportive and enriching learning environment for students.
  • Hiring Substitute Teachers: Many of our long-term substitutes have teaching experience and have successfully served in various roles within our schools. They are well prepared to deliver quality instruction that aligns with our curriculum. We understand the need for consistency with staffing and are working to minimize any disruptions to your child’s learning.
  • Recruiting and Retaining Educators: FCPS is exploring ways to deliver more competitive compensation packages, professional development opportunities, and a positive work environment to attract and retain experienced teachers.

The state report also highlights the importance of open communication and collaboration between schools and families in order to successfully navigate the teacher shortage. We are all in this together, and we all want the very best for our students.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership.

Sincerely,

Drew Campbell

Below is information about the Math Inventory, Reading Inventory, and Virginia Growth Assessments.  In order to minimize the impact on class time, Key has scheduled the winter VGA assessments to take place during fourth period Learning Seminars.   Your support in ensuring your student is in attendance on those days will mean they won’t have to be scheduled to make up the assessment at another time.

VGA

Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) uses the Math Inventory and Reading Inventory with secondary students in grades 7-12 to determine students’ strengths and needs in mathematics and literacy. All students in middle school and selected students in high school participate in these assessments.

The purpose of these assessments is to identify students who may benefit from additional support with literacy and mathematics skills. In addition, school teams will consider assessment results as they plan instruction for your student. Assessments are administered at the beginning of the school year.  Depending on grade level and initial performance, students may participate in follow-up assessment in the winter and/or in the spring.

Additional information about these assessments can be found at the following webpages:

If you have further questions about these assessments, please contact your student’s English or mathematics teacher.

State assessments measure the extent to which students have learned the content and skills reflected in state standards and may also be used to measure growth in learning state standards. The format and timing of state assessments vary by grade level and content area, as noted in the table below. These include:

  • Fall and winter Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) standardized tests in reading and mathematics. More information is available on the VGA webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/43932);
  • Spring Standards of Learning (SOL) standardized tests in reading, mathematics, and science. More information is available on the SOL assessments webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/35021);
  • Ongoing local alternative assessments (LAAs) including performance-based assessments (PBAs) completed as part of classroom instruction in science, writing, and social studies; More information is available on the LAA and PBA webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/node/45043).

The Grade Level Tests webpage (https://www.fcps.edu/student-assessment/grade-level-tests) provides information by grade level about the general assessment schedule and reporting method for each required assessment type in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS).  If you have questions about state assessments, please contact your student’s teacher or Key’s Testing Coordinator, Danielle Danz.

Conversation to Raise Awareness of Fentanyl and Other Drugs

In this video, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid interviews the Fosters, a family who tragically lost their son Cayden to a half pill of fentanyl mistaken for Percocet. This heart-wrenching yet eye-opening video of their experience is essential to raise awareness among parents/caregivers and students about the dangers of fake painkillers.

Please join Dr. Reid on Wednesday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m., at Edison High School for a community conversation about opioid awareness. You may register to attend. However, registration is not required; it is simply for space considerations.

Snow

Snow Days This Winter

For the current school year, FCPS will be returning to its previous procedure for snow days — there will be no virtual learning days when school is closed due to bad weather.

During snow days, students may still access Tutor.com, complete any supplemental learning opportunities recommended by their teachers, and view educational programming (available virtually and on public access television channels):

Eleven snow days are built into the existing FCPS calendar. Eliminating virtual learning days will allow us to maximize students’ in-person learning and provide equitable access to instruction and student services.
