Dear Crestwood Families,
The Crestwood Elementary staff is happy to welcome our Owls back to school. We hope you all had a cheerful, healthy, and relaxing holiday season. We are excited about our new learning and growth this year and all the opportunities that will soon be available for our students. In the next few weeks, you will be receiving information about our before school and after school programs beginning in February.
We are excited to see so many families coming to school to drop off and pick up their children! It is cold out there! Please make sure students are wearing appropriate winter clothing (coat, jacket, hat, mittens). Please reach out to the main office if you need assistance. We invite families to not arrive to school before 8:45 am as we don't want our kids to wait outside for long. Also, teachers and staff are not on duty until 8:45 am.
Parents, thank you so much for ensuring that our children come to school every day. We will have our first assembly of the year tomorrow where we will celebrate classes who are doing great with student attendance. We will also share our Attendance HERO program with our students. Classes can earn prizes if they come to school every day.
We can't wait to highlight all the great work happening at Crestwood ES. Have a great 2024!

Teacher Shortage Letter
Dear Families,
I hope this message finds you well. We are aware of concerns within our school community about the ongoing teacher shortage and increased presence of teacher trainees and substitutes in our classrooms. Please know that we are addressing this situation and are committed to providing all of our students a safe, nurturing, and academically enriching environment.
The shortage of qualified educators is impacting school districts around the country. This USA Today article notes that 86% of public schools are having difficulty hiring educators. A state report on Virginia’s K-12 teacher pipeline found that teacher shortages increased from 3.9% to 4.8% in the current school year.
Below are some steps FCPS is taking to fill vacant teaching positions:

Addressing the Teacher Pipeline: FCPS has developed outreach programs and partnerships with local universities to encourage more individuals to consider a career in education. This is critical, given the decline in individuals pursuing careers in education.

Welcoming Teacher Trainees: Our teacher trainees undergo rigorous training and supervision by experienced teachers. This enables them to provide a supportive and enriching learning environment for students.

Hiring Substitute Teachers: Many of our long-term substitutes have teaching experience and have successfully served in various roles within our schools. They are well prepared to deliver quality instruction that aligns with our curriculum. We understand the need for consistency with staffing and are working to minimize any disruptions to your child’s learning.

Recruiting and Retaining Educators: FCPS is exploring ways to deliver more competitive compensation packages, professional development opportunities, and a positive work environment to attract and retain experienced teachers.
The state report also highlights the importance of open communication and collaboration between schools and families in order to successfully navigate the teacher shortage. Happy Three Kings Day to those in our community who celebrate! This year's Three Kings Day artwork was created by Oakton High School student Roan V. Also known as the Epiphany, Three Kings Day commemorates the Biblical story of the three kings who followed the star of Bethlehem to bring gifts to the newborn Jesus.

Volunteer with Give TogetherVolunteer with Give Together
FCPS students continue to find incredible ways to serve their community while building Portrait of a Graduate skills such as becoming an ethical and global citizen. The school division is excited to collaborate with Volunteer Fairfax for the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service.
Students and families can volunteer on Monday, January 15, at Volunteer Fairfax’s Give Together event. It is designed to engage families with children (ages 5-12) in service learning. Projects will include a food drive, assembling caring kits for community members who need support, making no-tie fleece blankets for veterans, environmental stewardship, and support for animal welfare.
Students ages 13 to 18 are welcome to serve as teen event volunteers. This event is free and open to the public, but registration is required.

Opioid Awareness and Resources
Conversation to Raise Awareness of Fentanyl and Other Drugs
In this video, Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid interviews the Fosters, a family who tragically lost their son Cayden to a half pill of fentanyl mistaken for Percocet. This heart-wrenching yet eye-opening video of their experience is essential to raise awareness among parents/caregivers and students about the dangers of fake painkillers.
Please join Dr. Reid on Wednesday, January 10, at 6:30 p.m., at Edison High School for a community conversation about opioid awareness. You may register to attend. However, registration is not required; it is simply for space considerations.
The evening’s program is appropriate for parents/caregivers and students in grades 6-12. All attendees will receive free REVIVE! Narcan training during the event and learn about support services currently available within FCPS and Fairfax County.
FCPS’ website also has resources to help you to start the conversation and additional support for families struggling with substance misuse.

Immersion Registration
🗺️ Dual Language Immersion Program Registration
Registrations for the countywide lottery for Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs will open on Monday, January 22. Current pre-K students may apply for the kindergarten immersion program, and current kindergarten students may apply for the first grade immersion programs for the 2024-25 school year. Programs are available in French, German, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish.
Parents/caregivers who are interested may want to attend an informational meeting. Meetings are held at the school site. Check the FCPS events calendar for the most current information. Meetings will begin on Tuesday, January 16.
A virtual meeting hosted by the World Languages Office will include general program information. Access to this virtual meeting will be made available on the FCPS events calendar and the Dual Language Immersion registration site on the day of the meeting.

🔢 Help FCPS Reach 1 Million Minutes of Math
FCPS Family Math Week starts on Monday, January 8! Participate in games and stories online. FCPS is working toward a total of 1 million minutes logged by families. The event is free, with activities from ST Math geared toward students in grades K-6 and their families.
Math Week offers families an opportunity to experience math, literacy, history, and geography in a fun and positive way. All content will be available for families in English and Spanish beginning Monday, January 8. Visit the Math Week website.
